HOT STOVE

Wed Dec 07, 2011 11:13 pm

So this week in particular has been pretty active, especially for the Marlins. Heath Bell, Mark Buehrle (rumored) and Jose Reyes already, talking to CJ Wilson and possibly Prince Fielder still, it could be a killer team in south Florida next year. There are still other big names out there, too, like Rollins, Aramis for Men, Beltran, etc.

I've said elsewhere, and I'll say it here - I love Albert Pujols. But if it's going to take 10 years and $220M to keep him in St. Louis, I think it's time to cut the cord. He'll be 32 before reporting to...wherever...for spring training. That means at the end of the 2021 season he'll be 41, almost 42. Unless you think the DH is coming to the NL (which it might, with continuous interleague play coming in 2013 when the Astros move to the ALw) he's NOT going to be useful at that age. He's already got chronic heel and elbow issues (though after his surgery a while back he might be OK with the arm finally). Best hitter of his time? Absolutely. Still best hitter (and worthy of "best hitter" money) at age 38-41? Probably not.

How is your favorite team shaping up?

I'm a life long SF Giants fan. I'm a little dissapointed that we haven't made any significant trades. Rumer has it that they have reached their payroll limit and its unlikely we sign beltran or ross. We did get Angel Pagan from the mets, but at the expense of a solid reliever and Andres Torres (a fan favorite and all around nice guy). As far as Pujols is concerned, I can't see him leaving StL. But if they sign him for more than 7 years they are idiots. let's see what prince fielder does, I think he is worth more money right now.

On a side note, baseball is my favorite sport and I can't wait for spring training to start! My brother and I are planning a trip to AZ to see some action before the season starts.

I just hope my Mariner's don't sign Prince Fielder. Guys his size don't age well, and even a modest drop in power or contact rate would kill his worth.

Yikes.

I thought the Giants might try to re-sign Beltran. They obviously expected too much from him in the trade - worst offense in the NL and they wanted him to play like it was 2004 again. But he'd be a nice one to hold onto.

I agree on Fielder. He's got a lot of power, but if that starts to dry up, he'll walk less, and he's already not especially mobile.

At least Pujols went to the AL. 10 years makes sense since he can DH in his later years.

Orioles fan here. After the disaster that was last season, I'd almost prefer to blow the whole thing up and start over. Only keep the young guys and prospects. Oh, and fix the development system which has failed to produce very many ML-ready players, even from good prospects. Instead, we're trading and signing guys that will 'get us to .500'. <sigh> I feel like this team will never progress....

Ya, I think there will be a DH in the NL soon too, tho.
