New Build

Sun Dec 11, 2011 11:52 pm

I am back, I came here a few years ago and you guys helped me build my core 2 quad machine. Now I want to build another. My budget is around $1,000 USD. I am using my old HDDs (got a new ssd vertex 3 as of a week ago). Here is what I am looking at. A lot has changed since I built my computer and im looking for any tips/suggestions on any changes. I do want to overclock, not sure if you can/need to overclock memory anymore, to overclock the cpu?

Core i5-2500k 3.3

Corsair 600T White

Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813128498

Corsair Veng 8GB

EVGA GTX 560 Ti
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814130610

Seasonic 520W
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817151093

I only took seasonic because it was on the christmas system list. I think I would maybe like a corsair? Modular.

Total: $926

I am also looking for a CPU cooler, either a fan or a "all in one" water cooler, like the H60/80/90 etc...

No need for overclocked memory. That CPU has an unlocked multiplier you can change at will to increase or decrease clock speed. I've had good luck with my CM Hyper 212 on S1156. Here is the revised version.

Personally I'd go with an ASUS board. Same price and you get better BIOS features and fan control.

You'll be paying a lot more for a Corsair modular PSU. I'd stick with a solid 500-600W wired unit like the one you have listed.

Are you totally set on that case? $170 is a good chunk of change. Fractal Design and Antec, for instance, have cheaper cases with competitive features (Define R3, Antec P280).

Hardware-wise, you've got a great setup chosen. Z68, an unlocked processor, and a 560Ti will be super-fast. You might be able to save a couple bucks on slightly slower RAM, but probably not more than $10, so I'm not going to worry about it. The PSU should be plenty for this system, though since your mobo supports SLI there's a chance you may want more PSU if you decide to go that way down the road.

That aside, my personal preference would be an ASUS Z68 board such as this P8Z68-V/GEN3 because ASUS has superior fan speed controls and a nicer UEFI interface. The Gigabyte will be fine, but the ASUS will keep it quieter. At the same price as the Gigabyte, ASUS has a plain P8Z68-V with no gen-3 PCI-express slots. Not sure how much of a difference that will make in the next 3-4 years anyhow, because gen3 PCIe cards have to exist before it's useful. Both of these choices also support SLI.

For a cooler, I have a CoolerMaster Hyper 212+ as Dancin Jack does, and it has done a great job keeping cool and doing so quietly. There's a Hyper 212 EVO that's a couple bucks more than the standard Hyper 212+, and the difference is the base is supposedly much flatter for better CPU contact. At $8 it's not a TON more, but it is a bit more.
I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.

You might want to get a MB with proper dual pcie 16x slots that will run in 8x8 mode and not 16x4...perhaps a ud4.
