Steam Game Trading

Mon Dec 19, 2011 11:02 pm

Hey so since it appears we'll all be getting a bunch of games on Steam in the next few days, I figured I'd start this thread for people who want to trade the games they received as gifts. For instance, I've received Sniper Ghost Warrior Gold Base, Map Pack, and Second Strike. I really don't want it, is anyone interested in trading a game for it? Unfortunately, I can't trade it for 30 days yet, but I figured others could use this thread as well.....

You're a lucky fellow. I got a 25% off coupon for a Valve published game. The only Valve published game I don't own is Portal 2 and I can't use the coupon until after the sale is over.

Hah. I got the 25% off valve thing, and they're all 50% off at the moment AND I already own every single valve title...

I got Half Life 2 Episode 2, which I already own, and tried to gift it to a friend, but then the service glitched out. They seem to still be having stability issues.

There have to be a lot of computer science/IT people on TR who can answer this. Why can't Steam get their network to support the influx of traffic during the Steam sale? On the one hand I'm sure that their demand increases 100x or more in terms of downloads and what not, but they know this is coming. Amazon probably receives more traffic daily than Steam during a Steam sale, but they don't slow to a crawl. Is there difficulty in scaling a website to handle 100x the traffic it's used to?

I'm not in IT and know nothing about it but I would say they would have to have the physical servers to handle the increased flood in activity. Which means actual physical server boxes their end. i.e. the cost of setting them up probably wouldn't be worth it for the short time span of these things. (A couple of weeks).

I picked up Left 4 Dead, and since I already have it, I'm thinking of just signing up for another Steam account so I can double up on a few good games to play co-op games on.

Any disadvantages to a second Steam account on a PC (other than HD space) ??

If you install your games for all users, they go in the "common" folder and don't take up much additional space.

Are there any rules against having more than one account?
It seems like during events like this one, having more than one account would be a massive benefit, so maybe it's frowned upon?

I usta play a lot of co-op games and both hosted and attended LAN parties, so for friends that didn't have a higher end PC or console only friends, I provided the extra PCs and the games. Serious Sam, Company of Heroes, Dungeon Siege, Call of Duty, Unreal Tourney, etc ... all greats games and made even better with LAN play. Strangely enough, I only have one email addy currently, so I guess its time to make a Gmail account.

Nope. Just make sure you install the right games to the right account.
