Your first R-rated movie?

Fri Jan 06, 2012 4:14 pm

For me it was the summer of 1978, lying about my age (they actually asked back then), and seeing Animal House at my local mall multiplex. Can't remember the name of the PG flick showing then that my best friend & I stated as a decoy.

One must remember just how huge a cultural icon John Belushi was at the time, just 3 years into SNL. Yes, even up in the sticks of VT our NBC affiliate ran SNL.
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

I seem to recall my dad taking me to see Porky's Revenge back in the day. Not sure if it was the first R movie or not, but it seemed rather risque at the time.

Heavy Metal was showing several years after release on SelecTV (we didn't get cable when I was a kid; we were too far from town for it, so this is what we had) and it was my first R-rated movie when I was, I dunno, 7 or 8? I watched it with my dad. I loved it at the time, and I loved it through college and owned it on VHS. But I sat down to watch it streaming on Netflix a few months ago for the first time in several years and I was like "uh....?" It had lost its charm, I guess. I got to the part with the B-17 and I'm like "you know what? screw this" and turned it off.

I think it was watching Robocop at home with my mother, when it was a new rental.

I was a bit young (8?) to see that kind of violence.

while i don't recall what my very -first- rated R movie was, i can give a list of some of the earlier ones i recall:

Porky's, Meatballs, The Godfather I & II, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Taxi Driver, A Clockwork Orange, Jaws (was this PG or R? i forget), Network, The Exorcist, and 100's more...

I suspect Airplane was only rated PG when it came out. Alien was probably mine.

I'm not sure it was *the* first but one of the first R rated (or 18 cert as they're known here) was Trainspotting and I still think it's a pretty decent film.

The Running Man, back in 1987, was my first one. My dad took me and my younger brother to see it. The story holds up better than the special effects over time, of course. (PS I was only 13.)

The Woodstock documentary, when it was originally released. I was too young at the time to actually be interested (I was like 8 or 9 years old). Saw it again when I was in college after a night of drinking, and don't remember much of it from then either! I keep intending to watch it again sometime, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Aside from that, it was probably Heavy Metal (also while I was in college).

Trivia tangent: The Blue Oyster Cult album Fire of Unknown Origin has several songs on it which were written for the Heavy Metal soundtrack (one is even a musical plot synopsis of part of the movie), but which ended up not being used. The one BOC song that did end up on the soundtrack was Veteran of the Psychic Wars. IMO this is one of the best albums BOC ever released, and might even make my "desert island discs" list (depending on the length of said list)...

Probably The Blues Brothers. I watched that so many times as a kid. I didn't come to appreciate the non-car-chase parts until adulthood, though.

No sir .. it was the first movie that I saw a pair of breasts in, so I guarantee you it was 'R'. Yep, made quite an impression on me :)

Another great idea for a thread. Or does one of these already exist here?

My parents took me to see The Fugitive when I was 12. I didn't want to go, because I thought it was a dumb adult movie. I was absolutely riveted.

I thought there was one, but a quick forum search doesn't turn anything up.

Ok my first R rated movie was ALIEN and let me tell you at 8 years old it scared the doodoo out of me.My mother was and still is a scifi freak. She likes sci fi so much her first 46 inch panasonic projector hdtv had the scifi channel logo burned into the screen. So it was Mom,me and my older brother that went to see the flick.
I had no problems watching it,I loved the movie and remember i was on the edge of my seat throughout the whole thing.
As for that night and a month or so afterwards I had some wicked scary nightmares:) It did not help when my older brother made that dang alien Hiss noise in the middle of the night,He had it perfected.Inducing more then a few yells of MOM!!!

I remember that Xmas i got the alien action figure, with the extending mouth and everything. It was quite big 2-3 ft tall if i remember correctly, very detailed and was my all time favorite show and tell item in school:)

Mine was "Alien" with my parents, at age 6. Because some parents care enough to give the gift of nightmares.

In order,

on cable tv - The Deer Hunter

at the movies - Porky's

When I first saw it, Porky's was the funniest damn thing I had ever seen. The scene with Ms. Ballbricker in the shower nearly made me faint.

EDIT: As gory and as scary as it was, I am a little surprised that Jaws was only rated PG, considering it was released more than 36 years ago.
