Sounds like it is in the nightly builds but not the official releases then.

I checked the copy running in my Windows 7 VM, and it's not there.
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

Years ago I worked for a place that used Lotus Notes and every once in a while the service would crash and we'd get a popup on the Notes server that just said "PANIC!" with an okay button. Very useful, that.

SAP R/3 was also interesting... aside from occasionally throwing errors in German, there was one incredibly useful one that we'd see in the logs from time to time that said simply "Error X: Something happened."

My favorite - and I guess this shows my age - was the old "Abort, Retry, Fail" message from DOS whenever something like a disk read failed. Basically your only option was to keep pressing A, R, or F (or in earlier versions, I instead of F for "Ignore") until whatever it was you were trying to do actually quit for real. Very, very rarely would Retry actually work; and I've never quite understood what the difference between Abort and Fail was supposed to be.

Abort = Forcibly terminate the application with extreme prejudice, bypassing any cleanup

Fail = Return a failure indication to the application, and hope that the application deals with it gracefully

At least restoring Win98SE was a fairly quick process.
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

I'm not sure if it's still in the linux lp driver or not as I haven't used a parallel port in probably 6-7 years, but it dates back to the days on old Unix machines where a jammed line printer could in certain cases catch on fire....

One of the places I worked years ago had a printer which would periodically malfunction and start smoking. After something like the third such incident, someone hung a sign on it that said "Call Victory Auto Wreckers!"

Ya, nightly is not official releases. I'm talking about whatever it is they give to the public when you go to www.google.com/chrome and download.

It is in the Mac version, though - I just thought to look for it. I guess it's just Windows guys that have no sense of humor.

I seem to remember a parody of Windows when I was in college. It's a flash-based thing, but still funny, full of error messages. Here is the link. http://www.deanliou.com/WinRG/ Then you have to click on run WinRG flash demo.

Thanks, I only had all my work from this morning set up at the time. Your funny reference to an old game contains nothing to help me diagnose what went wrong.

www.rockpapershotgun.com when an error happens, a frigging text adventure pops up.

I couldn't find a way to beat it, though.

One of the systems I worked on at my 2nd full-time job out of school had its infamous "OOPS!" error. It has a custom OS which had been written in-house; if the OS detected a fatal exception it would print "OOPS!" on the console (which was a serial terminal in those days), and reboot. We'd get service tickets like "So-and-so got a couple of OOPS errors last night."

Apparently, the software function wasn't important enough to merit an actual name, because today one of my coworkers started getting repeated WinXP crashes from a modeling tool as follows:

"2: 2 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience..."
