Porch Gardening - Suggestions?

Fri Jan 27, 2012 5:53 pm

I down-sized and than re-sized my porch garden. Before I had:

2 Jalapenos Plants - 10" Pot
2 Green Pepper Plants - 10" Pot
1 Cherry Pepper Plant - 10" Pot
1 Tabasco Plant - 10" Pot
1 Hungarian Wax Pepper Plant - 10" Pot

I found a home for some of them to make room for new additions, so now I have:

1 Jalapenos Plant- 14" Pot
1 Cherry Pepper Plant- 14" Pot
1 Hungarian Wax Pepper Plant- 14" Pot
1 Meyer Lemon Tree - 16" Pot
1 Dwarf Suruga Persimmon Tree - 16" Pot
2 Dwarf Cavendish Banana Plants- 14" Pot

I have room for just about 1 more 14" pot on the balcony where the sun actually comes through. Does anyone have any suggestions for another plant I could use? I am not interested in any more Peppers, or anything that's vines. They all need to be tree/bush type of things, and produce something edible. They also need to be able to fit on a standard apartment porch, so usually dwarf varieties or anything that grows to a max of 5-6ft. Thanks! :)

If your porch gets direct, hot sunlight for at least half of the day, you could try growing a tomato plant. Use a tomato cage, though, else it will bush way out.

The only issue with that is sadly, I don't find Tomatoes work with my stomach.

Okay, are there any seasoning herbs you might like to use fresh? Basil and Rosemary could grow together in a 14" pot, you could even plant dill, garlic, chives...

Hmm I have never really looked into growing Garlic, that could be cool. How easy are onions to grow? When I cook I typically don't go outside of those two ingredients + hot sauce. Maybe I need to start opening up my seasoning tastes. :o

I imagine home brewing would be a huge adventure within itself. I don't have the room for vines though :/

Especially not vines that can grow a foot a day during peak growing season!

Onions and garlic are ridiculously easy to grown... I had some garlic pods that grew a couple stalks and it was like an alien looking into my window... my wife was not amused when she opened the blinds one morning :)

Another suggestion would be a lemon tree/bush.. it grows to the size of the pot, but you'll need to either keep it trimmed or well fertilized for lemons... I'm still trying to get mine to fruit... the buds start but then wither..

Do lemons require cross-fertilization with another tree? Would a smaller kumquat be easier to grow in a pot?

Typically you start them from a section of rhizome (i.e. a root cutting). Home brewing suppliers stock hop rhizomes in the spring.

Lemons can self fertilize. I already do have a lemon tree as I posted above (referring to the other person's comment). I was going to get a Kumquat tree, but I feel like I could do better. I was thinking about a Loquat, but I can't find the proper species in stock anywhere so it will be able to fit on my porch. For anyone curious, that species is called "advance".

Ah, that explains it. Around here the only thing growing on porches right now are snowbanks and icicles. :D

I think I'd rather have a winter than the ability to grow plants year round. X.X I miss being up North.

I'd suggest a small avocado tree. To me, this would be my dream come true if I could have one of these.
