Anyone have any knowledge/experience on this? My sister had her laptop die out on her, and my brother went to take a look. He has the same exact model laptop, and swapped the video cards. I guess doing that ended up frying/breaking his video card, and now there are two non functioning computers. I certainly would have approached the situation differently but what's done is done. There's a lot of ambiguity on the internet on replacing laptop video cards, so I really don't know if this is doable.

The laptop model (and video card model) is/are

Compaq 8510w
NVIDIA Quadro FX 570M

I can't find replacement Quadro FX 570M's anywhere, as it is a rather old generation card. Will newer versions work, or not really? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately you can buy entire copies of that laptop for $250-300 so it's kind of a toss-up as to whether it's worth it:

Your worst case scenario is that whatever fried the original graphics card started on the module itself and then worked backwards to the laptop, and then worked forwards again to blow up the second graphics module, which then went backwards again and blew up the second laptop. In which case you would spend $100+ trying to salvage the second machine only to watch that money blow up. Personally, I would go for buying the same make/model laptop, as cheaply as possible, and then swap hard drives. This may trigger a WPA panic-attack and an hour of quality time with Bangalore, of course, but unless you can scare up a chassis with the same card for less than $50, IMO it's time to cut bait.

If it's been a while since this copy of Windows was last re-activated, automatic Internet activation may just go through. I've done hard drive and motherboard upgrades on a few machines, and have never needed to call it in; but in all cases it had been a long time (at least a year or two) since the last activation.

It's an 80nm nVidia GPU. You're probably lucky it lasted that long.

My 8400GT is still working, I think there is a fair amount of FUD with that bumpgate thing. But it could be possible that the act of moving the card was enough to cause the bumps to fail. You could try the oven trick. I have never done such a thing but you now have two non working computers to practice on. I am going to leave it up to you to google/bing for the proper way to cook your cards.

8600M GT in my laptop still going strong. Hell, even has about 150MHz worth of OC headroom. This particular laptop was NOT eligible for the settlement. So not all mobile G80s had issues.

My 8600M is also in fine working order after 4 years of fairly heavy use (it's my only "gaming" card right now. D:). Only problem I've ever had is a really strange driver issue with Guild Wars (which still goes unsolved, but oh well). I am probably going to try the eGPU thing soon on this one though. Should be interesting.

I have a dell e1705 still that came with a 7900gs 256mb running at i think 350mhzcore and 5-600 mem,a core 2 duo t5600 2 gig ram and a 80 gig HD. I bios flashed the 7900gs to a 7900 gtx running at 600 core and 800 mem from day 1 and it pretty much doubled my 3dmark 06 score,from 3000 to around 5000.That sure did not help battery life,since i ran the fans on high all the time with some gk.... program.
But it still lives!!! surprisingly with that NV 7900 card overclocked like that for so long.It was lap burner,the bottom got very hot from the memory more then the gpu and cpu i thinks:)

Whoa, that's doable? Can I flash the BIOS on my 8600m? That'd be really nifty. Post some links if you get a chance.
