Backup your data to another drive or the original partition, delete the partition that you want to expand to and then resize the original partition to add the unallocated space.

If you have a backup of your data then for future purposes using Linux Live CD's is the way to go. You can increase the size of a partition without formatting it. Seems odd that something like Acronis couldn't do this though. Anyway I agree with Irate in terms of best practices. Backup your data first then resize.

For "Linux live CDs" above, read "GParted Live".

Also, if you are using Windows 7 you can resize partitions right from the OS using Disk Management. However, the built-in Windows 7 partition resizing functionality is quite limited and will NOT move any data during a resize, so it will only shrink a partition as far as the last bit of data written on the partition. You can use Defraggler to de-fragment you drive and then do a resize.

No need to use Linux, or the god awful Disk management resize tool. Use Partition Wizard.

How's that any better than GParted?

No need to make a live CD?

It's a minor difference, but a plus in my opinion.

download GParted iso from here : http://gparted.org/download.php
get UNetbootin from here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/unetbootin/

plug in a USB drive that has >130M free; run UNetbootin, which creates a bootable USB based on whatever (linux) liveCD, and UNetbootin doesn't overwrite your USB (unless you had anther liveCD on it)
reboot off of your USB

Maybe I'm missing something... but how is making a "live CD" (even with a USB stick, which is what I do when I need to use one) easier than installing a windows program?

Though, gparted looks to be useful if you don't have access to the OS for some reason (and I'll probably start using it anyway because of it's portability). For a one use, single machine though, how is gparted better?

IMO fewer things to go wrong if you use a livecd. Modifying the partition table while I'm booted from the hard drive makes me nervous.

I could see using a standard Windows program like that if I've pulled the to-be-operated-on drive from another machine and have it plugged into the computer I'm working on as a secondary drive, but that'd still be more work than creating a livecd or liveusb.

It's no worse or different than defragging the pagefile. Set your changes and reboot, done in 5 minutes. You don't modify the partition while it's actually booted. For one thing I'm not sure that's even possible without seriously screwing your OS up.
