Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo

Mon Feb 13, 2012 7:08 pm

Hi Everyone,

I'd like to get your advise on the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo, I'm currently running AMD 965 BE and thinking of increasing it to 4.0GHz however I can't do that without a decent cooler so someone recommended that cput cooler to me.

I was thinking of buying the Deepcool Ice Wind FS but I've been told the hyper 212 Evo is better? My question is there much difference between the two? also does any after market cooler takes more power/voltage than a stock cooler? Thanks

I have the previous version of this, hyper 212+, and it's pretty awesome. This has like a flatter contact surface so it should in theory be better.
I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.

I have a couple of the Hyper TX3 ones, which are essentially smaller/cheaper versions of the same cooler (only 3 heatpipes instead of 4, and 92mm fan instead of 120mm). They rock -- dropped my full-load temps about 10C versus the stock AMD coolers, and that's with the fan throttled back to between 1/2 and 2/3 speed by Asus Q-Fan.
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

I can echo the previous gen 212 Plus merits. I have 2 of them and they are a lot quieter than both Intel and AMD stock fans and cool much better. I read a review of it somewhere but cant remember where.

XBitlabs does pretty good cooler reviews. Here's their review of the 212 Evo -- they're a bit unimpressed, but only because the Thermalright True Spirit was a better value. But the True Spirit is hard to find (NewEgg doesn't stock Thermalright last I checked) and the CoolerMaster coolers are often on sale at NewEgg, making the value calculation different. Also the Evo comes with mounts for a second fan, so you might get even better performance for just the cost of another fan (some aftermarket fans like the Noctua Focus Flow come with a PWM Y-cable so you can run two fans without losing software control. or you can buy a splitter separately )

The only thing that uses power on the cooler is the fan, and they tend to run just a couple of watts -- power usage will vary more with the RPM of the fan than will from one kind to another. It's quite possible to run more than one fan off a single motherboard fan header; even some monster coolers pull only 4W or so and run off a single header. So unless you're getting into water cooling with pumps and whatnot, it's really not something to worry about (and if it comes to that you can always power them directly from a molex off the PSU rather than a motherboard header: all you need is an adapter, which many HSFs include).

Edit: I just happened to be looking through a Z68 mobo manual yesterday (ASUS P8Z68-V/Gen3) and noticed it listed the max draw for the CPU fan as "1A (12W)" -- of course not all motherboards are the same but I expect that's pretty standard for modern notherboards, and leaves plenty of headroom for multiple fans. (That motherboard actually has two PWM CPU fan headers, plus several other fan headers, so you could just about turn the case into a wind tunnel if you wanted to)

Not able to find any reviews of this model online, though FrostyTech has reviews of other models. Except the DeepCool Gamer Storm (which is more expensive), the others don't come close to the CoolerMaster Hyper 212 (they have not reviewed the Evo).

I've done some research on the two and the Thermalright True Spirit has gotten better reviews. HardOCP reviewed the True Spirit and came away impressed (both the 120 mm and the 140 mm models). http://www.hardocp.com/article/2011/11/ ... er_review/

As for finding it:
http://www.amazon.com/Thermalright-1007 ... 738&sr=8-1

I also ordered the Hyper 212 Evo from Newegg (before knowing more about the True Spirit) and it's sitting on the desk right here next to me because the thing came without a backplate. Cooler Master is supposed to be sending me a backplate, but I just got a second email from them asking me to fill out a parts request so I'm afraid they've mixed something up - I already filled out a parts request 7 days ago :-?

With all that in mind, I'd personally nudge you toward the True Spirit, but I don't think the Evo is a bad choice either.

I just put the Evo on tonight and I was simply startled at how much of an improvement it is over my long, long time friend, the Scythe Ninja Rev B. Now, I love my Ninja. I've had it for, sheesh, 7 years at least serving whatever my primary desktop has been. I really had never doubted its cooling prowess but after putting the Evo on I'm wondering if half of it's heatpipes are busted. Because the Evo dropped my temps by 10 C. 10 C is easy to believe over a stock cooler but not over my Ninja, no sir. The Evo is smaller, lighter, and has 2 fewer heatpipes and yet gets me 10 C cooler. I wonder, do heat pipes lose their effectiveness over time?

The Evo is holding temps to 50-52 C from an ambient of 16 C here in my chilly basement. The Ninja held me to 59-60 C at the same 16 C ambient - I tested the Ninja just before uninstalling it and putting in the Evo so it's a clean comparison.

As for installing the Evo... yuck. It was not fun. It seems way more complicated than necessary. For the AMD install why couldn't Cooler Master simply included some clips for the AMD retention lugs. The Nija does that and the thing can be installed in 30 seconds - seriously. The Evo took me 30 minutes but I think if I had to do it again I could get it down to 5 minutes - but that is NOT including removing the motherboard and re-installing the motherboard.

But it was definitely worth it.

I believe Heatpipes have gotten more efficient and are designed a bit different nowadays.
As for case makers it seems most have gotten away from removable MB trays, but have a large cutout behind the cpu socket for easier back plate installation.
Enjoy your EVO212.
Once i see some reviews on the 412s ill pick 1 or the other. So far i have only seen 1 412s review. Most cooler reviews are on 1366 cpus since they run a bit hot.But i would like some reviews on coolers where they use 1155 1366 and 2011 cpus. At least that way you can see what temps you will get with your cpu die size.

Some of Coolermaster's other heatpipe tower coolers do indeed include AMD-compatible clips -- the Hyper TX3, for example. The clips can be a little fiddly, but I've swapped out several stock AMD coolers for Hyper TX3s and it only takes a few minutes once you get the hang of it.

Heatpipes should not "wear out", but it is possible to have a defective one with a leak that allows the working fluid to boil away.

I believe the impressive performance of Coolermaster's recent coolers is due to the "direct heatpipe" design, where the heatpipes themselves are in direct contact with the top of the CPU package. Eliminating one of the thermal interfaces improves the efficiency tremendously.

The 212+ I have shipped with hardware to clip onto the regular AMD retention bracket, as well.

And in the correct front-to-back orientation, no less.

OTOH the one I have did not. Apparently there are versions of the 212+ that include it, and versions that do not.

All of my Hyper TX3s came with AMD clips though.

My Hyper 212+ came with a backplate that had three different 'settings' - two for intel and one for AMD iirc. It didn't have clips at all, had to be backplate mounted, though. I think you flip the backplate around for Intel support (I've only used it with socket AM3+)

My TX3 came with clip too. There would be no excuse for the diminutive TX3 not to use the standard mounting methods.

Yeah, that's a good point. I've seen most AMD coolers blow upwards, which is no good if your PSU is on top or you don't have a top fan vent.

i think the hyper 212+ is too big and heavy to use the AMD clip. all the ones i've seen use a third party retention mechanism. the TX3 however, uses the AMD clip.

Bigger and heavier heat sinks have used the AMD clip before, but I'd bet that the back plate solutions do result in higher pressure / better contact / better cooling.
