Corsair Pro Performance 128Gb not running at 6Gbps

Wed Feb 15, 2012 4:55 pm

Hey everyone, I just purchased a Corsair Pro Performance 128Gb drive, and hooked it all up last night and got Windows on it. I have it plugged in through the Intel 6Gbps Brown-colored port on my P67 Sabertooth. This is exactly what it says to do in the manual, and I am running it in AHCI mode. In the BIOS it reports as 6Gbps, so that all checks out. However, once within Windows nothing reports it as being SATA III nor does it perform at what I would expect this drive to perform at. It seems to still be running in the SATA II spec. When setting it up, I even used the cables from Asus labeled Sata III 6Gbps. Here are some screenshots so you know what I'm seeing:

This is the drive information through HD Tune:

This is the drive information through HD Sentinel:

This is the benchmark results through HD Tune:

I have all the driver's installed for the Motherboard before running or looking at any of this information. Does anyone have any ideas of what I'm doing wrong? From reviews it should be somewhere around 400MBps+ rather than the 350MBps+ I'm seeing. This looks like I said before that its limiting itself to SATA II speeds. Any help would be appreciated!

So now I'm a bit more confused, I downloaded ATTO and ran that benchmark tool:

Is ATTO a trustworthy source of information?

Make sure you have the latest bios updates for your board and the latest firmware. Also make sure you have the latest intel RST drivers. Finally under the drive properties in my computer I'd test with write caching on and off.

BTW, the fact your average speed is over 300+ mb/s in HD tune indicates you are indeed getting sata III speeds... You are averaging 336 mb/s and that is impossible with sata II.

I have no idea what the true performance of the drive is. I'd look at numerous reviews and make sure they are reviewing your exact model because there are significant differences between say a 256gb drive and a 128gb drive with the same controller/firmware. But atto seems to indicate you are getting what you should expect. You are 400+ depending on the size of the transfer sizes.

Burst reads (from cache) should also tell you if you're getting SATA III speeds.

Are you testing this as an empty drive, with the OS (and everything else) on a different drive? That's the setup TR (and most other competent review sites) use for their tests, so you're not going to see exactly the same numbers if the drive you're testing is also the system drive.

crystaldiskinfo will explicitly tell you what interface speed your drive is currently using. Just be careful when you install - it comes with a bundle of extra software that you probably don't want on your system, and they are selected for install by default. At least you can choose not to install the optional bundle.

ATTO uses a different type of data to test than the others. You're not going to get full theoretical speeds from the drive except with maybe highly customized data sets. In your first image you're getting over 300MB/s so it's obviously running at SATA3.

It seems you're not the only one with this issue...

If you can get a comparable 128GB drive and return the one you have for little to no money, that may be your best bet.

Something like this maybe - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820148442

If getting 300MB+ per second is considered Sata III than I suppose it has never run below the Sata III spec, because I have always gotten that. I thought Sata II could do well into the 300's though....

Thank you for this, it is properly reporting as Sata III in this program. It seems strange to me that the other program's are reporting it wrong, but they have not been updated in quite sometime so maybe they don't see Sata III properly.

Well, one drive on a SATA2 controller could theoretically do ~375MB/s. In reality you probably won't see anything over 300MB/s with one drive on SATA2 though. Two drives in RAID0 you'd probably be able to pull down 500-575MB/s depending on the drives. One drive on SATA3 would probably max out around 550-600MB/s.
