Just got new SSD's, no TRIM w/RAID :-(

Fri Feb 17, 2012 6:36 pm

On my Ipad typing this as win7 installs, and had a question for y'all. Putting two new Agility 3's in a raid0 on Win7, with ich10 chipset mobo and intel rst 10.8 drivers (smokin fast). I've read that intel rst 11.5 drivers will finally let TRIM work in a raid0 config - does anyone know when they are coming out?

I know the "ideal" way is when they come out to reinstall the OS with the new rst drivers (via F6 method) but does anyone know if I installed these drivers via device manager and then reboot the system, would 1) I have TRIM VIA raid, and 2) the system be stable? Thus avoiding (or rather stalling) the entire OS reinstall.

According to various rumors RST 11.5 (final version) is supposed to be released in "first half" of this year, but there's still no definite date.

I would say skip the RAID, the gains are not 2x. You get all the extra unreliability of RAID0 with little benefits.

i say use a real raid card instead of matrix (i mean rapid storage technology RST) onboard raid is crap. just get something simple like an LSI 9240 and you'll be a lot happier

You have Sandforce based drives, which tend to respond well without TRIM. If you -really- need the transfer speeds of 2xSandforce 2, then RAID-0 without TRIM is still a viable option, especially if it isn't a permanent one. If not, then as said above, just use one drive for your OS now, and split stuff between them.

Thanks for the replies. I like the speed of raid vs JOBD approach, and my data is well backed up. The mobo has built in raid which I am using, and I've heard booting on a PCIe raid card is sometime problematic (these two drives are the only ones in the system) and the system itself is not CPU limited in most tasks - an intel q6600 quad core, 8 gig ram.
