Moving the cloud in house - alternatives to cloud services

Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:18 pm

My goal with this thread is to catalog alternatives to cloud services, that can be hosted on one's own server. The goal in all of these cases is to maintain the convenience of cloud services (the ability to access the cloud service no matter where you are), while gaining the privacy benefits of self-hosting those cloud services.

This list is gonna be pretty bare at first, mind you. I'll group things by cloud services, and then what packages replace them.

If you've got a suggestion for a cloud service replacement, post it up. If there's a cloud service that you use, and you want suggestions for a replacement, post away.

Google+
Diaspora* - requires Ruby and either MySQL or PostgreSQL, and prefers nginx (but Apache should work as well) - may have performance issues

Google Reader
Tiny Tiny RSS - requires PHP and MySQL, has an Android client app

And, I'll go ahead and ask a question... anyone know of a webmail system that provides Gmail-like conversation grouping and search? Ideally, it would also have an Android client that exposed those features.

Check out VMware and project Octopus. Basically dropbox hosted on your own server. Not sure of the cost but I for one will definitely be testing it out when it arrives.

Opera Unite can cover some of those bases. I find it quite handy to use when I need to get something from my computer and I only have my phone.

I've been saying for a while now that letting others manage your data means you no longer control your data...

Most people either haven't thought about this issue, or don't care about it enough to do something like this.
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

Zimbra (http://www.zimbra.com) is more of an Exchange replacement, but it has threaded conversations and good search capabilities in the webmail part. Android can hook into Zimbra with Active Sync, but as far as I know there is not an app with features equivalent to the Gmail app for Android.

Hmm, also looks like iRedMail might be far lower resource utilization, and a fairly complete package, although the webmail is Roundcube... then again, I may end up just using a normal IMAP client for everything.

OwnCloud takes care of quite a lot, it seems...

Dropbox, Google Music, Google Calendar, and Google Contacts. And I think there's other plugins, too.
