Looking for special MP3 player

Fri Mar 02, 2012 1:12 pm

And I say special, because I am unsure it actually will exist at this point. Here's what I'm looking for:

-At least 8GB of internal storage, plus SD or SDHC expansion
    -Good battery life
-Ability to playback not only MP3 files but FLAC and/or OGG
    -Can't be an iPod

But here's the real kicker: it can't have any recording capabilities of any kind. Nor can it have any transmit capabilities. So no WiFi, no microphones, no FM recording, none of that stuff. My first thought was the Sansa series, but they have microphone recording capabilities. All the Cowon mp3 players from JetAudio also have the same problem (plus they do FM and line-in recording). So at this point I'm at a loss. Anyone know of any?

I think your beat. I don't even know any off-hand that will play FLAC?
Sorry that doesn't help.

Look towards Cowon MP3 players. They have the best sound and battery life in this business.

There used to be (and maybe still is) a project called Rockbox that lets you replace your iPod's firmware, and among its features IIRC are the ability to play FLAC.

bthylafh: Yeah, it still exists. Last release was from December of 2011. Totally forgot about Rockbox. That's a good call, especially if I can find an older ipod that it supports (only through 5.5g) that doesn't cost the full original retail price on ebay. (Seriously, can't believe people do that!)

Anyone have any other suggestions? Obviously being able to buy something new would be preferable.

Alright well I ended up going with bthylafh's advice. Got a 5th gen Ipod classic for $86 shipped with original packaging and working. Should get here midweek so I should only have a couple days without music at work. Hopefully I don't screw up putting Rockbox on there and brick it lol.

Thanks guys
