Updating video card drivers...

Wed Mar 07, 2012 9:42 pm

I've seen recommendations that it is better to uninstall previous drivers, reboot, then install the new drivers. I have a radeon HD6950 and usually I get a pop-up from ati notifying me when new drivers become available. I usually just follow the on screen instructions an do the auto install.

Do you guys recommend manually installing the drivers?

Manual uninstall typically matters only if you're switching to a different video card or upgrading from a *really* old (as in a few years back) driver.

(I'm referring to Windows here... on Linux all bets are off, as the video driver situation on Linux is still a bit of a mess.)
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

I always just installed new drivers over the last ones. Then a few years ago I mentioned that here on the forums and got a ton of flak for being irresponsible and clumsy, so I took everyone's advice and started uninstalling, rebooting, and installing from scratch on reboot. Both ways worked fine, and I'm probably on the same installation of Windows XP I was using from the beginning, so you can probably do either and it'll work, but going from scratch may be safer.

I always do the uninstall/install.
It's the way I was taught way back in the day when I 1st started building.
Force of habit? Probably.
Also.
When new drivers come out.
I read the readme.
What's fixed. What issues do these new drivers have.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Currently using v11.11 for that reason.

Edit

V12.2 are out.
Will sticking with v11.11
