Drinking some Fin Du Monde right now. The only problem is I have only one 750ml bottle, and after that the only grain based alcoholic beverage I have around is rye whiskey. I don't get along with him. :D

Man, I love La Fin Du Monde. I was leaning towards a bottle at Bev Mo last weekend, but ended up with Ommegang Dubbel and Saison Rue instead.

When we speak to a child who will not eat certain foods or drink some beverages we always feel we need to broaden their horizons to new things, and the goal is to get them to eat and drink a wider selection of stuff.

Yet, at some point as we grow older the opposite thing happens and we seem to narrow our views of food and drink down to what we consider the "best." This behavior in adults is just as rewarded in our 'growing-out' of those childish values and now associate ourselves with a superior standard for what we will eat and drink.

When it comes to nutritional values, our adult changes make some sense, but when it comes to flavors or simple elitism it seems we are just happy to act like children again saying "Ew! ICKY!" and not having parents there to tell us to keep an open mind.

I personally dislike beer, but I do have one on occasion. My only experience with IPA would be to describe it as "Soy Sauce gone bad" yet the review was using words like "Chocolate" to describe it. I do however enjoy the occasional "Budweiser" (1 every 3 months?), most likely because its so mild I find little in it to dislike.

Coffee I can tell a difference between good and bad. I can not tell a difference between $40/lb Jamaican Blue Mountain and $6/lb organic roasted (but I can tell if it is "Store Brand"). I can not tell a difference between burr/blade grinds.

What am I drinking right now? Homemade Sweet Iced Tea make with high-quality loose leaf tea from the internet. Its WAY better than any other tea I have ever had in memory. Yet, I still enjoy sweet iced tea when in restaurants even knowing it will not be as good.

Went back out to the Silver Gulch brewery for the wife's birthday. One of the many beers we had for the night was a Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier Dark. Which I think someone a few years back mentioned as this is the oldest brewery in the world :o . I remember being kind of pissed that no one knew what I was talking about when I was looking for this beer a few years back, but thanks to the Silver Gulch carrying lots of imports, I was able to get one.

It was very similar to Franziskaner Hefe-Weisse that I previously mentioned, only the Dark had a good amount more body to it without being overpowering. All around I loved the Dark Hefeweissbier, and I'll added it to my list of beers to get when im out and about.

Vanilla Coke. My favorite soda that is actually still buyable (with my favorite ever probably being Pepsi Blue).

Only know one grocery store that stocks it though, and they usually sell it at $6-$7 per 12 pack. They had a 3/$10 sale last week and I stocked up. If they ever stop, it'll be a rough week while I go through withdrawal....

The real thing - Coke (high test)

Vanilla Coke is the best vanilla pre-made soda, great sugar high drink.

Thanks Welch, you're making me not dread the hefeweizen days of summer quite so much.

Matilda and Gulden Draak tonight. Eventually I'll get to this Ommegang Dubbel and Alaskan Barley Wine in my fridge.

Oxidized strong ales can indeed have a bit of a "stale soy sauce" character. Sounds like you may have gotten a really old bottle, or one that had been mis-handled. Probably wasn't an IPA though, as those aren't supposed to have chocolatey flavors in them...

I have the same attitude towards heavier/stronger beers -- they're not just for winter anymore! :D

I do enjoy hefeweizens year round, it just gets kind of boring when you see mostly just wheats and pales everywhere.

Pales I have no issue with; they're year-rounders for me. I'll admit to never getting/understanding wheats/hefes. As with JBI, I don't slot brews into seasons. If you find it tasty, drink it and calendar be damned.

I'm all for breaking away from some of the seasonal preconceptions. My problem is that it can be tough to do that when most places are shaping their availability to seasonal demand. We have a couple really awesome sources in Tucson, but not much beyond that, so we can be kind of limited at times.

That said, I stopped off on my way home from work and had a Blanche De Bruxelles and Smoked and Oaked. Both were kind of disappointing. The Bruxelles was a pretty good wheat, but I was expecting more Belgian yeast and bitter orange. It ended up being pretty generic, but very good for what it was. Similarly the Smoked and Oaked was too heavy on the smoke and oak, I wanted a lot more Belgian yeast, especially when they were talking about dried fruit character from the yeast. It was good, but pretty much purely American Strong, and didn't much resemble a Belgian Strong like they claimed.

Now I'll finally get around to either the Alaskan Barleywine or Ommegang Dubbel while I sit here setting up a print server deployment.

Some of us (myself) live less then 10-15 minutes from Dragonmead. yum! If you plan on showing up to the TRBBQ on August 11th, 2012, I can take orders and purchase them prior to arriving that day. Just gotta speak up for those who are coming in out-of-state and can't obtain our finest of brews.

With that said, I hope some of you can offer the same gratitude. JBI or whomever lives in a state that sells NEW GLARUS beer. OMFG I WOULD DIE FOR THAT... and 3 FLOYDS... and maybe some New Belgium ales (not distributed to MI yet, but in 2013 they will - woo hoo!). I'm all up for some beer swapping over the traditional tech geek parts garage sale.

Can't get New Glarus here any more; have to drive up to WI to get it. Three Floyds and New Belgium are pretty easy to find though.

Never been out to Portland yet, or Seattle for that matter... I want to go bad!

For those who want to know more about this cacao place, I always provide a website so it makes it easier for others to just click on the linky:

I've heard that lemon is used to cover up a musty old beer (from the 'tender at my local biergarten). Speaking of Fin Du Monde, I brought one and a Our Finest Regards (Pretty Things Brewing) to my buddies daughters' third birthday. You know, to congratulate him. Uh. Anyway, Finest Regards was pretty spectacular. All the dads there flocked to the beer table and enjoyed it very much.

Now drinking a Philz Coffee Silken Splendor. Not bad. I'm wide awake!

American wheats are often served with orange or lemon, but you'd probably get laughed out of the bar if you asked for that in Germany. It's kind of like Mexican lagers being served with lime, which are basically German lagers.
