Wow Ivy Bridge Runs hot Oced

Wed Mar 21, 2012 2:43 am

http://www.tweaktown.com/articles/4621/ ... ndex8.html
Here is a Early overclocking review of IVY BRIDGE .Now i know they are early samples but my goodness the 3770k is breaking 105c!!!!,perhaps this new 22nm tech has a bit of leakage or the internal thermal diode is screwed up but they said it was throttling.
I am not impressed with this early look compared to sandy.I hope to see retail IVY cpu reviews soon. But if they are goin to run that hot you all might as well get your Sandy bridge cpus while the prices drop and plop them in a z77 board until a new stepping comes out that reduces the "POSSIBLE" heat they might produce..I repeat POSSIBLE Heat.
Cheers
Or you Englishman can mount your PCs horizontally and boil your tea water in tiny little teapot heatsinks on your bran spankin new Ivy Bridge cpus :P

Too early to say what is the cause.

I suspect it is because 22nm doesn't take well to overvolting/overclocking, it may explain why Intel was delaying 22nm process.

I woudln't trust the results, i mean look at the thermals of the FX 8150.....7 degrees Celsius in idle? Come on...was the system tested in a fridge?
The Core i7 990x at 50 degrees during load? That's way too little if it was tested with the stock cooler.

Also i'd like to point out that they didn't mention the ambient for none of the results nor did they mention (from what i've red) the coolers used.

The laws of physics are telling me that something is fishy with that review. If you believe their power measurements (on the same page as the temperature measurements) the Ivy Bridge OC'd to 4.8 Ghz is drawing 5 watts *less* at load than a stock-clocked FX-8150. How is the temperature going to shoot up into the stratosphere for the IB chip when it is drawing less power than a default Bulldozer? If the temperature is correct, then I don't trust the power measurements either, so something is not right with these numbers.

That is totally why i said possible heat, but i still feel it was worth to noting. They even commented on it so i would not think they had a heatsink mismounted or forgot the thermal paste or something silly like that.
I also noticed most bulldozers have bogus temp readings thats total horse poo:)

Well the link is gone, we'll probably have to wait for NDA to lift before we see it return. When I click it now I'm just taken to TT's homepage.

http://foro.noticias3d.com/vbulletin/sh ... p?t=391334 its in spanish so use google chrome or something to translate.Great pictures and graphs of different combinations of TIM material used between the cpu die to IHS and IHS to h100 heatsink.
I think it is pretty obvious now that intels TIM material for IVY bridge is garbage compared to soldered on IHS like sandy bridge.Soldering is the best TIM for spreading the heat through the IHS.
He removed the IHS on a 3770k and replaced it with many different kinds of Tim materials with the liquid metal Coolaboratory Liquid Pro coming the closest to actually soldering the IHS to the cpu die in effect greatly increasing the thermal transfer area.
At 4.7ghz with HT @1.30volts the highest it would oc with the intel crap i mean TIM material between the IHS and cpu die with a H100 cooling system the intel cpu hit 88c.With the liquid metal Coolaboratory Liquid Pro between the IHS and cpu die, temps dropped by at least 20c even as much as 25C,yep 88C to 63C @ the same settings!Just replacing the intel TIM with AS5 dropped temps 9C to 79c.
The best configuration at these same settings that dropped it 25c allowed it to run at 4.8ghz @1.35 volts and only hit 67C! 4.9ghz @1.41 volts hit 71C amazing!
I imagine if it was soldered on like sandy bridge cpus it would drop another 5c maybe more!

If Someone knows how Intel soldered on sandy IHS,correct solder material special oven temps and duration etc. They could make a good $50 to $75 even $100 a chip soldering on the IHS for the enthusiast overclocking crowd.

P.S that liquid metal stuff is awesome a bit of a pain to work with from what i have read but it is the best stuff on the market.JUST MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT USE IT ON ANYTHING ALUMINUM IT CORRODES IT. I would love to see the same tests done with a super high end air cooler also like Notuas NH-D14, Phanteks PH-TC14PE and Cooler Masters new TPC 812.So far the 812 tests out great a couple degrees off the two other coolers i just mentioned but no one has yet to test one with 2 fans to stretch its legs.

while 7 is probably super low, my FX-6100 runs at around 22C at idle overclocked (but I do have an aftermarket cooler)

Well we all know AMDs temp sensors are incorrect most of the time lately. If a AMD chip is running at 7c way under ambient the houston we have a problem:) Intels sensor are a bit more accurate i have yet to see one read below ambient temp.
But this guy did all the tests on the same chip with the same cooler and motherboard.Did you even look at the article? And no they were not done at a Ambient temp of 23-24ºC.But i could see a few degrees C variance in his environment testing throughout the day.
But the guy did do a nice write up with pretty pics and such and it looks like he was paying attention to testing Ambient temp.

I've done a little review about the 3770K TIM replacement. The original is in spanish, but here are the results:

3770K L152B693
Asus Maximus V GENE Z77
2x4GB Samsung 30nm green 1600 @ 2133 C10 1.5v
Samsung 830 1280GB
Corsair H100 + 2x Nidec Gentle Thypoon 1450rpm 51cmf (solo Push)

Artic Silver 5
Artic MX4
Prolimatech pk-1
Coolaboratory Liquid Pro
índigo Xtreme

Ambient temp 23-24ºc

Even so, a few of the Intel CPUs seem rather close to the (presumed) ambient temp at idle. Close enough that the entire chart probably needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

I'm not sure how AMD's sensors are implemented these days, but the inaccuracies could also be due to improper calibration of the mobo circuitry that reads the sensor. It would be interesting for someone who has an anomalously low reading on an FX chip to try it in a different brand/make of motherboard and see if the low reading persists.
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.
