HDMI Audio won't work w/new 7850

Postposted on Fri Mar 23, 2012 6:36 am

Just today I swapped out my 4870 for a new 7850, and now the HDMI audio isn't working. The video works fine, but the computer seems to think the HDMI audio output isn't plugged in. I remember that back in the day I had to download a separate little driver for HDMI audio, but everything I've read seems to indicate that it's already included with CCC now. Due to earlier issues with CCC, I installed only the driver and CCC itself but no optional features. I've already sent an email to AMD support, but there's no telling how long they'll take to get back to me. Anyone here have any ideas? I've already tried restarting my computer with the TV plugged in and on, as well as plugging it in after the PC boots.

You're right. You don't have to use separate or third party drivers for the audio any more. That's been bundled in. But I dont know if that exists in the drivers only package or not.

My suggestion? Download the whole latest catalyst control center suite.

Uninstall everything driver related for the old radeon (go through device manager if you're really want to clear stuff off).

Reboot and let the generic windows drivers take over.

Then run that catalyst control center installer. You'll still get the option to check or uncheck different components (so no game trials or whatever other crap is bundled in :D). Make sure you have the display drivers and the audio drivers checked.

I already did all of that earlier to troubleshoot the error message problem I'd been having. I even used Driver Cleaner Pro between each installation to be sure I got everything. I'm running the 7800 series driver and CCC from AMD's website (updated on 3/19). Is any of that optional crap (the SDK, decoders, etc, but no mention of audio drivers) likely to have the HDMI audio driver? I'm assuming not, but if anyone thinks it might, I guess I can do yet another re-installation and just put up with the error message if it means getting my HDMI audio back...

No. I think in the past year or two, I've always seen "HDMI Audio Drivers" listed as its own checkbox as part of the install components. Sometimes it was greyed out (giving me no choice but to install) but it was always its own item

It's entirely possible, for whatever reason, that the drivers are not ready to support the 7x00 series, or maybe specifically the 7800 series. One of the flipsides I've noticed about ATI/AMD's "driver every month" effort is sometime stuff just doesn't make the cut for the release you expected it in.

side note: The flipside to that flipside (gods, are we going contrapositive here?), is that I've started not caring about driver releases and just sitting on what works for months at a time, where as when I ran with nVidia, I used to actively search for updated drivers :D

I am running a slight fever, but do you have a header that needs to run from your audio card/on-board to the video card? If so, is it plugged in correctly?

You don't have to do that for AMD video cards since like the 4xxx series.

I believe this to be the case. I just got a 7870, and the newest 12.2 on AMD's site doesn't support my card; I get no option to actually install the video drivers, just the optional stuff. I had to use the drivers off the CD it came with, which says 12.3 (8.95-120214a-133943E-ATI) - not sure if this is some beta version or what...
