Most of the posts in those discussions are really off the mark, but whatever. Okay, so they didn't think it would be a good idea to do a C++ port.

Why didn't they just set up a little installer to make a shortcut for you that requests some more memory for Java like your little batch file does? Assuming that giving it up to 2GB will solve this freezing issue (which as far as I'm concerned is a showstopper level issue because it makes the game *unplayable*). You don't have to port a damn thing, just make a shortcut to get around the JVM's limitations which cause the game to become unplayable.

Well after a whole lot of tweaking I gave up on my 32 bit JRE (which has Eclipse functioning just fine) and installed 64 bit. That also allows me to allocate more than 1.5GB so I'm running it with a heap ceiling of 3GB now and it's been going smooth. The frame timing graph is also much more consistent.

Minecraft Out-Crafts Warcraft

Sun Feb 12, 2012 9:42 pm

CPU (Computer Power User) Magazine, March 2012 (Vol 12 Issue 03), pg 11 wrote:
When it comes to popular PC games, Blizzard Entertainment's World of Warcraft has long been the benchmark by virtue of its one-time claim of 12 million subscribers. As of September 30th, the company reported that its sub numbers had decreased, but still stood at 10.3 million, which is nothing to sneeze at. There's a new sheriff in town, however: On January 14th, Minecraft creator Markus Persson (aka Notch) reported via Twitter that his game, which only left beta and became a full release as of November, had 20 million registered users. Persson's Tweet also pointed out that if each subscriber weighed 70kg, the total weight of the game's players would equal 25% of the weight of the Great Pyramid of Giza. That's most likely not the comparison we would have gone with -- and not just because we don't know what a kilogram is -- but thanks to Minecraft's runaway success we suppose Persson can pretty much write whatever he likes on Twitter.

That's the worst analogy ever. Maybe he had just got back from a trip to the pyramids.

Turns out with the 64bit java i never saw the game use much more than 200MB of its heap and no more lag spikes. Obviously some bug or errant GC behavior caused the other JVM to crash and burn when running the game. This experience of mine just demonstrates why java is a horrible platform for gaming. It's a system that defers the cleanup of memory so that it can and will be done later, so that your animations could be interrupted, and you can't even do anything about it.

I probably should have posted this earlier but a PM just reminded me... I am sad to report that due to an incident involving the word "penis" being spelled out in blocks near my nephews' house we decided to limit the server to family only to avoid my family-in-law needing to start a separate server for us to play with them on. Sorry.

No worries, it wasn't anyone from TR. Sadly there's no amount of "I trust these guys" that will convince a protective mother things are safe after an incident like that. :-?

...and it's not like those kids are never gonna see the word "penis" anywhere else. I mean, WTF... it's the clinical term, not in the least bit obscene.

lol @ JBI, I agree!

It seems this phenomenon is pretty common (note: potential NSFW, the following images are of the word PENIS spelled out in pixelated blocks):

She understands that of course - it was more a problem of it causing her to realize her kids we're playing in a server with adults that might not be great a censoring themselves (I would argue that in the context of a Minecraft server "penis" is indeed obscene). ...but I've almost said "f***" in front of them multiple times, its easy to slip-up... We're talking about a 4 year old and a 7 year old BTW, they can read the chat log pretty well...

yeah... but really. in today's online society - how do you really prevent them from seeing all that is bad? we're talking 90%+ of the internet is adult-themed.

How? Well by measures such as the one we've taken for one. ;)

Also they don't get free access to the internet. Of course when they are on YouTube or something they are always looking up Minecraft videos...

yep, minecraft.thegleek.com, standard port :-) open for all

and ironically, it's running off of the ugly green linux server that I purchased from JBI at the TRBBQ!

Note: This is a vanilla server running with NO mods, no BUKKIT, nada... No ops either, not even me. Any other questions, just ask.

i would, but i'm not going to bother looking up what the "standard" minecraft server port is to log on. if you're going to post an ip, post the entire ip.

Umm, if you don't specify a port it uses the default port, wait for it... ...by default (its 25565 BTW).

I signed in once Gleek (and thank you for the invite) but it seemed too laggy to me, not sure if it was just my location or your servers hardware, but it was probably me, not you.

ah cool! to answer your question:
DLHM wrote:

nothing really, since I stated it's a vanilla MC server, I am running no "mods/plugins/bukkit" that usually is set up to prevent or hinder grievers.

I do have another server (running bukkit with plugins) that has been running for years, but it's sitting idle now, since vanilla mc server is so much more fun!

I might give your server a stab once you upgrade it to 1.4.2. I've been rocking the singleplayer lately because all the servers I hop on to have stuff built for miles and I wasn't really interested in walking for several days to find something new.
