Corsair 300R - Quality Control Issues

Thu Apr 05, 2012 2:42 am

In case you guys hadn't noticed or heard (or perhaps you are wanting to buy one). I recently purchased a Corsair 300R for a friend and built his upgraded system in it. I plugged into the front audio jacks and went to test the sound, NOTHING. Odd, I had made sure the sound drivers were installed correctly, nothing in device manager was screaming for drivers either. When opening the sound manager I noticed that the microphone was registering something, but only when I tapped either of my headphones, but not the mic... I decided to switch the 3.5mm plugs into opposite from marked jacks and quickly was surprised to see that everything started working.

So..... I Googled up the issue and was greeted by multiple forums where most of these users have the exact same issue. Apparently some genius cross wired the two devices! So your jack marked headphones will now serve as a mic jack and vice versa. I just thought that post may save a few gerbils a headache or two. The good news is that if you take off the front panel, you can unscrew the wires and switch them to make it work the right way. Still, its kind of a let down to see a good company like Corsair make such a simple mistake. It can really turn some prospective buyers off to your products.

The plus is that it can be fixed as I stated, but if for some reason you really feel the need to send it back to be done by them, Corsair has been amazing the two times I've had to deal with their RMA in the past 5 years. But considering how easy and non damaging the fix is, I'd opt to save the hassle of shipping it personally, or just remember that the two are backwards, big deal.

Note, I've built multiple systems in the Corsair 600T, 500R and 400R andy none of them had any QC defects. I'm wondering if they outsourced this case to another company or factory. Everything else in the case is flawless though.

*CORRECTION*
The two are not actually "Mis-Wired", the 3.5mm analog box/ports are simply sitting in the wrong spot inside of the front panel housing. When you open that housing you can slip the green and pink analog ports out and swap them. Problem fixed.

Wait, let me get this straight. You RMAed the case even though it was an easy fix and you could do it yourself?

How did you reply to his post without reading any of it? He switched the ports himself, all done. He just noted that for folks unable or unwilling to do the extremely minor tinkering involved, that Corsair's RMA dept. has treated him well before, so is likely to do so here as well.

Good to know. That's their cheapest case, right? Probably just doesn't get the same QA love that the rest do.

Ya its their cheapest case, can usually find it for around 75. I bought this one from Amazon so im not sure if Corsair has gotten to straightening out newer ones that they manufactured. It seriously is just a matter of someone putting the two audio jack boxes in the others slot. Id still buy the case knowing that i can simply take 3 minutes (literally) to fix it, without having to unplug anything from the already assembled system.
