AR15 Ammo is hard to find

Mon Apr 09, 2012 9:44 am

I think the back porch is right place for this if not please move.

So I recently bought my first Ar. I got a Stag model 2. I did not realize how hard it would be to get ammo. I live in PA where there are not many laws stopping me from getting it but it just seems to sell out everywhere. I wanna buy in bulk of at least 400rds. I know there are people here who have gun obsessions so I was curious if any of you guys were having the same issues or if you know any online sites that have cheap .223 or 5.56 ammo actually in stock. Also no steel casing only brass please.
Also curious if anyone else has AR's and maybe we can get some pics going.

You want the "Gun pr0n!" thread that's been going for several years.

Can't help you with the ammo; my usual supplier doesn't have large quantities of that caliber in brass and none of mine shoot it anyway.

This is why I love TR. You can ask a question about anything, and in just a few minutes someone either has a quality answer for you, a rant about how you're doing it wrong, or both.

Props to pfntn for what looks like a great link, too.

try ammuntiontogo.

Lots of the people I know that shoot a lot get thiers there (I don't shoot enough to warrant it).

In my personal order of preference:

1) http://www.ammoman.com - Eric the AmmoMan is fantastic. He ships insanely fast, has great prices, fair selection and fantastic customer service. He doesn't have the depth of selection as some places, but when he has it in stock, you're golden.

2) http://www.sportsmansguide.com - Lots of shooting stuff and good deals on ammunition. They sell quality stuff, cheap stuff & crap stuff. They also get some of the weirder, obscure stuff. It's well worth it to sign up for their membership club. It's also a decent place to get emergency preparedness stuff.

3) http://www.cheaperthandirt.com - Not technically true, but still great prices. They give bulk discounts, but they seem to be allergic to ordering by the case. You end up ordering 10 boxes to get the same amount, but with comparable prices.
If there is one thing a remote-controlled, silent and unseeable surveillance/killing machine needs, it’s more whimsy. -- Marcus

Word on the street is that there's another ammo shortage a-coming. You may be seeing it.

Try http://www.natchezss.com and http://www.grafs.com.

brownells.com may have some as well.

May I assume that the reason for the coming ammo shortage is R&P material?

Hey Vrock. Enough with that no computer specs in your sig crap. Live and let live. This is a computer tech site after all. As was pointed out in another thread (by you?) you can turn off sigs in your user control panel if you don't want to partake in the tech enthusiasm.

I wasn't aware I was executing nerds for posting their specs. I'll make sure to stop that immediately!

So, OT: I reload, and I would encourage anyone who wants to shoot lots of .223 to invest in a few things:

http://www.midwayusa.com/product/434975 ... -remington

http://www.midwayusa.com/product/107333 ... S014434975

http://www.midwayusa.com/product/476992 ... -lock-stud

http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/a ... x?a=486628

Also, H4895 powder, Varget, and/or BLC-2. And small rifle primers, and bullets. Do it now while components are still relatively cheap.

that is exactly what i was going to suggest. or look to see if there's a shop in your area who reloads ammo. there's a gunsmith shop here in town who specializes in reloading AR and AK/SKS ammunition because the demand is so high here.

Yeah. It's a shame too, because if it's anything like last time, when prices do stabilize they won't be as low as before.

The only winners here are the ammo companies.

Does an uptick in military demand for 5.56mm absorb supply that would be available for the civvy market, or are the markets completely separate? Not a trick question; just askin'.
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

It's also generally considered safe to use .223 Remington in a 5.56-designated upper (the reverse, using 5.56 in a .223 weapon, is not recommended).

I don't know. But it doesn't seem like there would be increased military demand, given the current situation. If anything, there was a surplus, as Lake City and Federal ammo was everywhere not too long ago. I think that this "shortage", just like the last one, is mostly self-imposed.

A great economical plinking load for 5.56mm/.223 is 25.0 grains of H4895 over a 55 gr FMJBT, in case anyone was wondering. Not as fast as the military fodder, but I'm punching paper, not bad guys. :)

The best thing about H4895 is that it is versatile. Works in everything from .223 to .30-06.
