Does an uptick in military demand for 5.56mm absorb supply that would be available for the civvy market, or are the markets completely separate? Not a trick question; just askin'.

If for no other reason, I read that Homeland Security has placed an open order for like 400,000,000 rounds of hollow point (0.40? 0.45? 9mm?) and like 200,000,000 rounds .223. The numbers are from memory so aren't ultra precise.

They can be used overseas as well so long as they're not used in war. Embassy guards, federal agents, etc.

Since Homeland Security is not uniformed military, the path you're treading down doesn't hold.
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

And now that I think of it, Homeland Security=the States, doesn't it?

Still, that's 400 million rounds. WTF would they need that many for? That's enough to equip every soldier in the miltary with a basic load.

Must be they need lots of practice. Further down this road R&P lies.

Speaking of bulk bullets...

www.precisiondelta.com has good prices on bulk handgun bullets. I think it's a 2,000 bullet minimum order, but shipping is free and the projectiles are quality. I bought 2,000 9mm rounds a year or two ago from them and still have about 1,300 left.

Also, H4895 powder, Varget, and/or BLC-2. And small rifle primers, and bullets. Do it now while components are still relatively cheap.
I'm trying to convince SWMBO to let me upgrade to a progressive press. I'm looking at Hornady's, actually. Wish me luck!

I have the Lee Classic Turret Press...it's a good middle ground press between a true progressive and a single stage. And it's around $110, so it's wife-friendly. Very nice press for the money.

I can crank out 175-200 rounds of pistol ammo an hour on it, which is plenty fast enough for me. That means 600-800 pulls of the lever depending on if I'm using three stations or four, but it's not that bad.

Works well with reloading .223 ammo too, but as I measure and trim each rifle case that's above max length, it doesn't go as fast.

Surprised http://www.ammoforsale.com isn't getting much love in this thread. They usually have some of the better prices on the Web.

But here's an awesome page on the best ammo for AR15: http://www.ammoforsale.com/best-ammo/ammo-ar15. Curious as to what you guys think of it.

I've been checking the sites mentioned since the thread popped up and wound up ordering 500 rounds from ammunitiontogo.com (thanks Paul!). Cabela's had a 200 round brick of Remington for $70, but nothing else compelling. I was mixing types and brands to get to 500 anyway, and most of the sites mentioned were too high, out of stock, or only selling 500 and 1000 round quantities. Oh to have the $$$ to drop on a 5000 round package!

BTW, my local Academy had a good selection that was pretty close to internet+shipping prices with the carryout advantage. Glad to see they FINALLY opened a store out here.

Have you looked into reloading?

For the price you'll pay for 500 rounds, you can get a nice setup and a few boxes of ammo.

Yeah, eventually I want to start reloading, but I just picked up my first AR, and gotta have something to throw downrange with it. I'm waiting for a cousin to upgrade his station this summer and pick up his used equipment pretty cheaply.

A bit late to this thread, this is in reply to the OP:

I'm sure you already checked walmart but they really are the best place to go for ammo(unless you're picky). Their per round prices usually come near to or beat bulk online purchases. The caveat is that they've only got common calibers and no military surplus type stuff. For new production brass encased 5.56/.223 they're a good bet. A few years back it was hit or miss based on their stock on hand but my experience of late is that they usually have filled shelves.

Should be able to walk out the door at .42 cents a round for 5.56 by the hundred(5% tax included). Pistol ammo there is also very affordable. I sold my AR-15 last year, wasn't really doing anything for me - to each his own.

On a related note, a few months back at work we fired 4000 rounds of 5.56 between 5 shooters at a very informal range(temporary, set up own targetry). Quite a good day of shooting. Kind of boring after a while but I guess you take some things for granted - people pay good money to shoot on their own time.

That's not a bad price. That comes to about $8.40 a box. You can find reloadable .223 for as cheap as $6.00 per box onine. The local rob-you-blind gun shop here has it for $9 a box.

You can reload for about $4 a box.

*edit: math was off.
