Skydrive space lowering, act now.

Tue Apr 24, 2012 8:10 pm

So Microsoft is lowering the amount of storage that Skydrive gives you from 25GB to 7GB.

HOWEVER: If you opt in now, you can chose to keep your 25GB of storage by claiming a "free upgrade." I believe this is only available if you have already used your skydrive however.

With the new update that allows you to upload 2GB files to it, a free 25GB of cloud storage is a really hard thing to beat right now. Compare it to Googles request for $2.50/month for that same amount.

Take action, fellow gerbils.

I logged in today and 'claimed' my 'free upgrade' to 25GB. Never used Skydrive before in my life.

Still haven't, in fact.

I do love me free cloud storage, though.
Please don't edit my signature for me. Thanks.

I use neither Google nor MS storage, but I'm betting MS is doing this because they saw google drive and thought if google's only offering 5 gig free and charging for 25 gigs, they can only offer 2 gig for free. If google drive was offering 25 gig free, would MS drop their free offering to 2 gig?

One more thought - does anyone around here run their own "cloud server" aka home nas that they have online access to? As much storage as you can afford (in a hard drive form in the hundres of gigs/terabyte range) and true privacy...

I have a server and I give FTPS access to it, does that count as "cloud"?

Probably not, but to be fair they still offer the most amoung the major players (google, MS, Apple, Dropbox)

And also, its 7GB, not 2.

Right on dudes, I just took advantage as well. I also discovered that you can easily link multiple accounts; I had one associated with my personal email and another with work. However, when I logged into the work one, I did not have the option to take the 25GB free upgrade, so it's just got 7. This may be because I didn't create this one until much more recently than the personal one, and/or never used Skydrive with it before, as some of you have guessed. But anyway, thanks O.P.!

Hmm. I've had my account for a while and I see no sign of said upgrade. Maybe because I haven't used it in months?

Cynan, it appears to be a little flaky. I believe offically you are supposed to have used your skydrive at least once before April 22 in order to claim the free upgrade, but a lot of people seem to be able to get it without having use it. I have a friend of mine that has 3 hotmail accounts and only managed to get it on one of them.

Might be some unknown factor at work.

Didn't work for me but I'd never used it before. It's only allowing files of less than 300 mb so at this point it's useless to me anyhow.

300MB files uploadable via the web browser. 2GB files uploadable via the downloadable client.

Thanks!

I've used skydrive before, but mainly just to hold school papers and other documents I didn't want to lose in a hard drive failure. Less than a couple hundred MB.

"Cloud" is a buzzword and has little real definition (the words hosting provider come to mind) so that set up should count as a cloud. You can access the space for reads and writes remotely - isn't that the essence of could?
