I don't understand how bitcoins are viable at all.

I feel like it could. Its simple enough to mine for bitcoins, but the company would have a logistic nightmare keeping track of all the very small transactions. It has taken me like 5 months to get 5 bitcoins from one computer which is like $20, so they would be making money on the order of pennies...
