Surprised how fast 2.4ghz SB based celeron is

Mon Apr 30, 2012 5:54 am

Picked up a refurbGateway slim tower with H61 sandy bridge @2.4ghz celeron 4gb ram 7200rpm500gb HD for 209$!!! 350$ anywhere else.
Needed to replace my old am2 1.5ghz dual core HD zino HTPC that is dying with HW blue screens.
Picked up a low profile silent HIS 6450 for 44$ was goin to return it if the HD2000 IGP was good enough...but it was a little flaky. The AMD 6450 works fantastic as a HTPC card, since they only use 20 watts total on furmark i am pretty sure the little 220watt psu will be fine. The PSU is on the bottom so the pcie16 6450 passive card is mounted inside the system all the way on the top.The Slim case has a lot of vent holes on top right above the video card along with a decent decent sized side panel grill. It has a intel style heatsink with a air scoop to get closer to the side panel grill. The fan has a AVC sticker on the middle of the 80mm estimated fan blades and never runs above 1050rpm and is silent.Unless i turn off smart fan in bios, then it rips at 4000+rpm and is very loud.
The HIS passive 6450 does run a bit hot 55 c idle and 67 playing a uncompressed bluray stream. The cpu seems to stay between 31c idle and 39c loaded. The chipset hits 50+C si i think i am goin to add a silent slim 80mm intake fan just to help cool chipset and video card.Just need a 4 pin fan or a adapter for MB.

Its a speed demon surfs web and everything HTPC wise i think almost as fast as my 2600k rig.Plus it stays at 1600mhz just like my 2600k until loaded.I Guess you cant make a slow sandy bridge even with only 2mb l2 cache.Once i disabled the IGP it got faster.I take that is from not having to share its small cache between cpu and gpu.
Best 260 dollar pc i ever used.I think intel has got the low end cpu war won since that G530 sandy based celeron is only 50$.I am very impressed/happy.

Split from: New Ivy Bridge Build - Browsing / Folding / Gaming

JAE can you find a complete liano based system with 64bit win 7 OS 500gb HD 4gb dual channel memory and a dedicated 6450 gpu for 250-260$ I looked for hours online. That was my 1st choice. But after reading neweggs cust 5 star average reviews on the SB 1155 g530 i had to pull the trigger since they only 1 left in stock.
I do have time to return it.But i do not think a liano system will be as snappy as this, but i never used one.But in comparison with my 2600k rig, this new system seems just as quick once i disabled the IGP and installed the 6450.I think sharing the small cache between the cpu and gpu slowed it down when i had a 1080p video running and doing other stuff.
I probably wont ever do it but i could upgrade the g530 to any 65 watt dual or quad sandy bridge if i had to.

But you are the king of deals so if you can find a liano i might be interested.

I had one of these for quite a while before I came into some money to upgrade, and had ZERO performance issues. THey seem to be phasing them out, at least in retail. At MicroCenter they used to sell them for $49, and now they have a Pentium G620 (2.6Ghz, 3MB cache) for the same price.

I haven't shopped for a pre-built Llano system. I did spot a decent price on an A75 motherboard and the A6-3500 the other day. An A55 board would be even cheaper.

With the A6-3500's integrated Radeon HD6530D graphics you shouldn't need the discrete graphics card for a home theater PC. Mine runs satisfactorily with the A8-3850's integrated Radeon HD6550D graphics.

Sandy Celeries are pretty fast, yep. Definitely more than adequate for office tasks.

The SX2370-UB30P retails for just $10 more than your SX2855-UR11P. Here's the comparison:
http://us.gateway.com/gw/en/US/content/ ... .GCFP2.006

With Llano, you get much better integrated graphics and more cores but lower single-threaded performance.

If Llano's integrated graphics and single-threaded performance are "good enough" for your application, it's a better solution. If you're going to get a discrete graphics card anyway, then Sandy Bridge is the better option, though I would favor the faster Pentium G850 if I were assembling my own.

The Celeron G530 benches as almost exactly the same, performance-wise, as a Core 2 Duo E8400. Not bad for being clocked 600MHz lower, with better power consumption and integrated graphics.

JAE thanks for the input, you can always find stuff that slips by others:)But that system is 360$
I grabbed the UR11 tower assembly for $209 then add the 44$ HIS hd6450 passive 1gb card for a grand total of $253, a steal in my book, plus its just my new HTPC in my bedroom. But i happened to luck out and it performs well past my expectations with its duties as a HTPC, websurfer and even some light gaming.
I would have loved building my own but win 7 alone is 100$,so $153 would not get me much:) Perhaps a e350 board and mem plus a salvaged HD all built in the cardboard box the E350 came in.I Have to add i wanted to spend no more then 300$,Heck down the road maybe i will upgrade the cpu to a i3 but as of now its snappy a plenty fast for its purpose.

Another plus is that the system is so quiet the only time i hear it is when its late a night and the hard drive seeks, but most of the time it is streaming from my Sig gaming rig on a 1gb ethernet connection and i cannot hear that:)
To add to my happiness i just got a Fios 35/35 internet connection,I consistently test at 43MBs or around 5300kb a sec.The TV pictures on every set in the house are much better also. All for $20 cheaper a month. So far i am a happy camper.

... and the one that you got retails for $350 and required adding a PCIe graphics card to meet your HTPC requirements. You cannot buy a suitable graphics card for $10.

Differences between the two systems:
A6-3600 2.1 GHz quad-core vs. Celeron G530 2.4 GHz dual-core CPU
Radeon HD6530D vs. Intel 2000HD integrated graphics
4 vs. 2 memory slots
1 TB 5400 rpm vs. ½ TB 7200 rpm hard-drive
2 vs. 0 USB3 ports

You got a good deal on a used PC. If you had been shopping for new parts, Llano would have been a viable alternative to Sandy Bridge.

I was very lucky finding it as a lease/refurbished.i thoroughly inspected the interior of the decent chassis and found not a spec of dust ,the 2 pice exspantion slots are break out so it never had a card installed in it along with the outside was covered with that plastic covering they use for preventing scratches during factory assembly. In fact it looks like it was never used at all.
Maybe it was bought and then returned its just too darn clean to be a lease return then refurbished. But I have no idea how company's do that so what do I know:)
