Next Generation Consoles Powered by Trinity?

Wed May 09, 2012 4:52 pm

I've read many rumors about the next generation of gaming consoles and it doesn't say this specifically. However, stop me if I'm wrong, but it really sounds like they are going to be powered by AMD's next generation APU or something closely related. Any thoughts on this or speculation on what it means for the hardware and gaming industries if this is true?

An AMD APU, possibly with a different cache setup and re-spun for TSMCs 28nm process sounds likely to me. I'm betting that whatever replaces Bulldozer (stopped keeping track of ever-behind AMD CPUs) will probably be cut down and fused to a VLIW4 GPU.

Right now I just hope that they can deliver better fidelity and smoothness across the board than the 360/PS3 can do while rendering to 1080p (possibly 3D).

Yeah Trinity uses the Piledriver cores and Northern Islands based graphics. I believe it is still 32nm, but I could see them using 28nm.

The big thing to keep in mind is the lesson MS learned with the Xbox- don't let someone else own the IP in your stuff. With the 360, they purchased the IP from AMD (ATi) and IBM, and then fabbed it themselves; I expect them to make a similar arrangement with AMD this time around. For that reason, what we see in a console may or may not be a direct reflection of what AMD ships as Trinity.

I'm just hoping that they all are taking their time to get it right the first time:)

I would not be surprised if we get a setup that will last for 10 years.

I agree with this; however, I also feel that the only way for consoles to really meet my expectations they would have to be a lot more expensive than most people would like. They could do it by contract like they're doing with this new Xbox 360 push. Some will say this is a bad idea, but hey, it works for our phones which are a whole lot more expensive than consoles. Wouldn't it be better in the long run to have the entire platform be more valuable and enjoyable for everyone?

EDIT: Actually, I take it back. I could see it just being used for more profit instead of a better product. Unfortunately greed rules...

I don't really like xbox360s,but i do own one ,a original run with a bad dvd drive. I hate shooters on consoles in general. The only thing i really enjoyed on consoles were the sports games madden hockey(DANG FLYERS) baseball etc.

I hope they design the new one with good cooling, the die shrinks will help but i really hope they are not running at 80c all the time.

why don't they use Intel CPU's? They are much better in almost every aspect. except they are more expensive...

I hope they go the other way. Just call it an xbox and release an updated model ever year round November time frame. That way they can keep the cost down (say $200 or $99 with a Gold Subscription) and keep the console relevant. As long as the games work / upscale on the newer models, I don't see a problem.

That's the answer, plus you cannot ignore the graphic advantage AMD proposes, rather than dealing with 2 different vendors for CPU and GPU, it's much better to deal with one who provides all in one solution.

Supposedly Microsoft is going to introduce "forward compatibility" for existing games when run on future hardware which will allow games to not only work but also upscale. Let's hope that the rumor is true, although rumors for ps4 predict no backwards compatibility at all unfortunately...

IMO opinion, they may go with different manufactures for GPU and CPU, if that i what it takes to get the best performance at the lowest thermal level.
The makers know they always lose on consoles to start, but make up for it on the games, so don't worry too much about cost to start.

What they really need to concentrate on is what will it take to compete with PCs for the next 5-10 years, and may factor in a mid-cycle refresh with backwards compatibility.

If I was buying a console to game on, I would need it to do everything as good as or better then my PC.
With all those thoughts in mind, here is what I would want.

1)Intel CPU for best performance at lowest thermal cost. ( i.e. Ivy Bridge 4 or more cores, or the next gen)
(With a Intel Chipset like Z68/77, they can use both SSD AND Mechanical Storage and get a lot of fast performing storage)

2) Nvidia or AMD GPU, but it needs to have the ability to run at a lot higher rez this time around, since I want it will need to support 1080P or 4K in 3D, and/or 2-4 displays at once.
(the days of split screen should be over, unless of course that use that to make people buy a 2nd console)
Multi screen and 3D gaming at 120Hz plus should be mandatory

3)As much ram as they think they need, then double it.

4)Motion control + VR GLasses

5)Thx Sound / Imax type sound support

6)Better then Bluray optical drive, AND Better then "N" Wifi. (These should be upgradable options)

My main point is, they need to be forward thinking since who knows when the following refresh will be, so they need to really beef up the machine, with the best visuals; upcoming specs will need them.

The link also show you what cameras and camcorders can already capture at these resolutions.

I wonder now if it's looking more or less like this will be the case. Not Trinity, but an AMD APU.
