Need a replacement CPU fan/heatsink

Thu May 17, 2012 12:31 am

I'm sure this will be an easy question: What would be a good replacement CPU Fan/Heatsink for a Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 processor? We used the one supplied with the E8500 when we built her computer and it is making a high pitched noise now. Can I just replace the fan?

Thanks!

If your case is wide enough to accept a tall cooler with a 120mm fan, the CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Evo is a very good performer for $35. If you need a shorter cooler and you don't have super-tall RAM heatsinks, the CoolerMaster GeminII-S524 is a good performer for $31. These coolers use large 120mm fans for quiet cooling.

I would rather go for ARCTIC Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2 for $29 or Hyper 212 Plus for $29

Choose from Cooler Master, Thermalright, Prolimatech's lineups. Just remember to consider size and performance.

Size because it has to fit into the case, so look for "case clearance" required or you can calculate if it will fit with the side panel opened using the "heatsink height".

As for performance just read a few reviews about the specific models you're interested.

The Core2Duo E8500 was a socket LGA 775 CPU so just remember this when choosing the cooler models, as it has to have support for this socket ofc.

As for specific models recommendations, right now, i'd suggest the Thermalright True Spirit for Intel or the already venerable Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus.

Another thing to consider when choosing a cooler is motherboard heatsinks (some have extra high ones that could interfere with the cooler's heatsink) and slot clearance (some mobos have the first PCI-E x16 slot closer than usual to the CPU socket, making impposible to mount the cooler in a vertical orientation).

Oh there is also RAM heatspreader clearance to be considered, some coolers have a certain RAM clearance since the fin array go over the first ram slot even when it mounted in a vertical orientation.

I could go on but i think you have enough info to find yourself the best cooler for your budget.

microcenter has the 212+ for 19.99 ,the evo has about 2c-4c better performance but for your cpu the + will work fine as long as it fits in case and you don't mind removing the motherboard to install the backplate. If that is a problem and you do not overclock you might want a push pin setup.
Either hyper 212 + or Evo is leaps and bounds better then the stock garbage.

Newegg is currently offering the Corsair A50 for $20 AR -> http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835181012

I bought this same HSF from TigerDirect 2 weeks ago when it was $25-20 MIR = $5. Now that was a hot deal ! Note that this cooler appears to be a bit louder than other models, running at 2000 rpm but otherwise its a top notch choice for a budget HSF.

May be able to just get a replacement stock HSF on eBay or the used market? A lot of people (yes, us gerbils) pretty much just ditch the stock HSF right away in exchange for an aftermarket. So there should be lots of unused stock HSF out there. Heck I may even have a slightly used one here myself. ;)

Another vote for Coolermaster's tower-style heatpipe coolers. Amazing performance at very reasonable prices.

A new heatsink seems to be about $25 on eBay. For that price, you could rather go with a CM 212+.

OP, my used stock HSF (from the E8400) is available. PM, if you're interested.

I'll vote for the Arctic Freezer 7 pro rev.2. I'm using it in my rig for years and it keeps my CPU cool.:-P

Ebay shows S775 stock coolers for $5 shipped http://tinyurl.com/c2ahbdl

A replacement fan is $4. http://tinyurl.com/7p7q4mr

A stock speed Wolfdale runs in the 30 watt range . There's no reason to spend $20-30 on a big aftermarket cooler.

I just got the hyper 212+ to replace the stock hsf on my Q8400. Set to receive it tomorrow. Unfortunately gonna be out of town so trying it out will have to wait.
