Monitor suggestions please

Wed May 23, 2012 9:07 am

Bottom line is that I just don't have the disposable cash for an IPS monitor. Plus I don't do any photography type work or anything that is color demanding. Mostly basic computing and some FPS gaming.

I'd like to spend around $200.

I've been considering these two monitors. They run anywhere from $180 to $225 at various vendors. I'm not real sure what the difference is between them.
ASUS VW246H http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6824236049
ASUS VS248H-P http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6824236153

Any comments on these two, or suggestions on alternatives?

Thanks for any help.

The VS248H-P is a LED backlit display with a contrast ratio of 50,000,000:1. Your contrast ratio basically is how sharp your images can be (given the same resolution). Higher is better.
On second thought, let's not go to TechReport. It's infested by crypto bull****.

No, the contrast ratio is the ratio of brightness of the blacks to the whites. Numbers like 50,000,000:1 are dynamic contrast, which means the brightest white with the backlight all the way turned up divided by the darkest black with the backlight all the way down, so they're meaningless.

Sharpness comes from dot pitch, screen coating, refresh rate, and a handful of other factors that have little to do with the contrast ratio.

+1 for JAE's list. A good IPS monitor for $200 is amazing, just make sure you check out input-lag measurements before you buy!

Nice list. Thanks JAE.

Since I already have dual 22 inch monitors, I was hoping to step up to at least a 24, and hand one down to my son (who has a 17"CRT)
I'm just sort of thinking that spending ~$200 to move from 22 to 23 wouldn't be a worthwhile investment. Is that wrong?

Thanks

What is the native resolution of your existing monitors?

I believe that it's worth it to upgrade from a 1.76 MP TN LCD to a 2.07 MP e-IPS LCD, especially when you're also allowing your son to upgrade from a CRT to an LCD. I am a big believer in the "trickle-down" theory of computer upgrades.

Of course, I spent nearly $1100 on my 30" monitor 5½ years ago, so my evaluation of monitor value may be different than yours.

It appears that the refurbished Dell is no longer available at the outlet.
Would you make a specific recommendation from the remaining choices?

The UltraSharp U2312HM still shows up in the list for me.

Click on "Check Prices" under "Shop All Monitors". Sort the list by price. The U2312HM is the fourth-most expensive monitor in the outlet store.

oops, my mistake. I see it now.

I've purchased several items from the Dell Outlet in the past, so I have no qualms about buying there.

So, from your list above, this is your best recommendation? How do you think it would perform in gaming?

Thanks again for your help.
