Welcome to the Tech Report!

Have you checked out the System Guide?

What is your budget for the complete system?

Do you live near a Micro Center?

Aside from needing to know your budget and recommending you look at the TR system guide, some good Tech Report charts to look at: (knowledge is power)

"low end" GPUs

"high end" GPUs (not including the GTX 680 or 670..come on TR)

CPU gaming charts (not including Ivy Bridge)

Sandy Bridge overclocks better than Ivy Bridge (~300MHz more for comparable CPUs on air), though Ivy Bridge consumes less power. I would still go with Ivy Bridge, and yes, you'll need a "K" series chip like the i5-3570K to overclock on Intel.

WOW Thanks for the replys!

Ok so my Budget is going to be around 1200. Going to be buying a few parts every month and putting it into there cases. But I dont want to build a crap PC so Im willing to take it slow. I live in canada so I use alot of Internet shops and NIXC.

$1200, is that for everything? Seeing as though you're coming from a laptop, do you need a monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, etc, etc? Just curious, so we dont end up recommending a $1200 tower and then you have to turn around and spend $300 or more on peripherals.

This is important with factoring costs...although we'd be happy to suggest parts for these as well :D

The other thing that I did not see mentioned was storages. Are you going to be saving a lot of music, files, movies, etc.? Have you given thought to a SSD? How much you want/need on storage will affect your budget. I imagine you would be going with a regular DVD drive, but you could also consider a Blu-Ray drive if you're using this as a media center as well.

Good luck with your build!
On second thought, let's not go to TechReport. It's infested by crypto bull****.

If possiable 1200 would include The Screen. BUT If its going to really hurt my tower building I will not worry to much.

I have Look into SSD vs HDD and cant really see the + to SSD other then faster Load/boot times. For the price I do not really think its worth it. Any input would be great! 7
I dont have a lot of media Files and Im not a DL crazy. So 500GB to 1T Would be fine for me. Wont go under 360GB. Would like to maybe do streaming, But the focus is running good games at at good graphics with no lag for Pvp/WvW in Guildwars 2.

Also is it better having a small Boot drive? and if so Should it be a SSD or HDD?

With the DvD/CD-ROM Drive Im really not worried just grab a cheep one. I hardly use them anymore. Watch movies on my 360/PS2 and all my games I Buy online and DL or on flashdrives/External Hardrives. Only really need one to install my Windows 7 disc and I have a External Drive for that if need be.

Also I am trying to choose a case. Which of these 2 are better for function and performance?

The Corsair 300R
Link: http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Carbide-S ... B006I2H0YS

or

NZXT Phantom 410
Link: http://www.amazon.com/ca-ph410-g1-Phant ... 339&sr=1-3

Is it really worth the extra 40$? Will the MoBo Fit in both cases?

Ok So Intel Core i5 3570K Processor 3.4 4 BX80637I53570K vs Intel Core i5 3450 Processor 3.1 4 BX80637I53450? Is overclocking Worth it? Does it kill the life of the PC?

One more thing. What VC would you go for?

ASUS ENGTX560 DCII OC/2DI/1GD5 GeForce GTX 560 (Fermi) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card
Link: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... llFullInfo

OR

Galaxy 56NPH6HS4IXX GeForce GTX 560 (Fermi) 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card
Link: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6814162085

The Only thing I can see differences is that The ASUS is already overclocked and the Galaxy has 2gb of Mem vs the 1gb of mem on the 1st card. Is that a really big difference?

I would not choose either of those graphics cards if gaming is your main goal for this PC. You could buy something with a bit more oomph or you could wait for NVidia's 28nm GPUs to arrive later this year.

Buying your components piece by piece over several months is a horrible plan.

Save your money and buy all of the pieces at one time. Almost nothing depreciates faster than computer components that you've purchased and not yet assembled. If you wait until you're ready to purchase the whole thing, there are likely to be better, faster and cheaper components available than you can find right now.

Seconded and requoted for emphasis. I understand the incentive/reward structure -- some relatives of mine had a tight budget and a splintering patio deck that they wanted to rebuild with expensive plastiwood, so every pay cycle they bought two plastiwood boards and then rebuilt the deck several months later once all of the boards had been purchased -- but this doesn't work with depreciating assets. Progressively upgrading an existing system sometimes works, but progressively building a new system does not.

Now, you might be able to optimize the purchase price over a short span -- say, a month -- by purchasing major components in two or three lots when good sales come around, rather than all at once. But if it's going to take longer than that, just save up and buy all at once.

I personally think that any computer (tower) that costs more than $600 should have a SSD, otherwise its just not going to live up to its price. Storage speed is a BIG bottleneck these days. While I encourage you to take my advice, there's always the option to throw an SSD in later to "unlock" the rest of the performance laying dormant in your new computer using a hdd.
