SSD Showing as Removable

Thu Jun 07, 2012 9:18 pm

Hi all, this kindof fits into storage/windows/motherboards so if the moderators see fit go ahead and move it where you please.

I am setting up a new Ivy Bridge build and ran into a problem. I have an ASRock Z77 Pro4-m and a 120GB Vertex 3 MAX IOPS. While setting up the UEFI, I missed an option in the storage settings that determines how the SSD is treated. Options are: external device, hard drive, SSD and (AHCI is enabled). It defaulted to external device and I noticed in the windows task bar that it was removable using Windows' "safely remove hardware." After digging around in the UEFI, I noticed the mistake and changed the setting to SSD. However, when I saved settings and booted back into windows, my SSD still showed up as removable.

Is there any way to correct this or am I going to have to reinstall the OS using the new setting?

After a quick search on the interwebs, the consensus would be that this problem is caused by the drivers of the motherboard. Can you check to see if you installed everything needed in Device Manager? Even if you did, where did you get the drivers, from the packaged CD or the website of the manufacturer?

If they are downloaded are you certain they are the ones needed for your mobo? Double check everything and see if there is any mistake. I'd recommend you download the newest drivers from the manufacturer's website (specifically the drivers for chipset controller and raid or w/e that's called).

I have to admit that the Windows install manager can be pretty damn stupid.

I have learned that the easiest way (not necessarily the correct, or best way) to get windows to partition and use disks properly is to unplug all but the OS drive whilst you install windows, and then plug the rest in only once finished.

Otherwise, crap like this happens:
- Removable OS drives,
- Boot manager partitions on the wrong disk (even though you TOLD it to use Disk0 in the custom-install options)
- Swapfiles on drives you don't want them on.

Assume Microsoft is going to get any possible choice wrong, and don't give them the opportunity to choose.

You need to install the Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST) driver that is on CD that came with the motherboard. Lots of SSDs will appear as stoppable/removable until you do this. This is a common issue.

The SSD was the only drive plugged in at the time of Windows installation.

I will give the Intel RST drivers a shot. The only thing I had done last night before I posted this was to run Windows update (including other products from Microsoft) a bunch of times. I have yet to intall the motherboard drivers from the CD.

I was going to be out of town this weekend so I figured I would toss this up and see if I got any bites until I got back. Monday I'll install all proper motherboard drivers and see if that fixes the problem. If it doesn't work, its not a big deal to reinstall Windows since thats the only thing I've got on there. (btw, yayyy native USB3.0 support on IVB so I could install Windows from my USB3.0 flash drive!!)

My Corsair is doing the same thing, I never really gave it much thought though, its not like I'm taking it out and even if I did accidently hit remove or whatnot, I'm pretty sure a reboot would fix it.

Now you got me thinking about it again, lol.

Can you confirm that the drive is not marked as "removable" in the BIOS?
Should be under drive options.
On a recent Asus board, and my currant ASRock board, any drive can be selected as hot-swappable or not, allowing quick removal ie. in a hot swap drive bay.

I had the same problem. I have a asrock z77 pro 3.
I fixed the problem by downloading and running "Intel Rapid Rapid Storage Technology"
I guarantee you this will fix your problem.

Sorry, I forgot to follow up on this issue. The Intel RST drivers solved the problem and everything is running smoothly. It does seem odd that they didn't get installed in the Windows update process though. (yes I have the box checked to recieve updates for other products etc etc)

just as a side note, this applies to all AHCI devices on Intel chipsets, mechanical and flash.
