Used 480 GTX for $180- is this a good deal?

Sun Jun 10, 2012 2:47 pm

Hello there folks! I'd like to replace my trusty ATI 4850 with something newer, and I have the opportunity to get a used 480 GTX for $180. I was wondering if you guys think this is a fair deal for a card of this vintage, or do you think I should hold out for better?

A new GeForce GTX480 goes for $210 at Newegg. A hot-clocked Radeon HD7850 for around $260 provides the same performance for less than 1/3 as much power and heat. You could also get the same performance from a new GeForce GTX570 for around $275.

Your used GeForce GTX480 would provide the same gaming performance.

Thanks for the response.

Here in Canada I've seen that EVGA 480 going for ~$200 as well, although taxes and shipping usually add another $30-$40 on to that price, which puts more distance between the used and new prices.
There are some used GTX 570's for sale locally as well, going for $200. What would a fair price be for a 480 under that condition, would you think? I'm aware that the 480 has a bad reputation for heat and noise (with good performance), and I'm wondering how much leverage that could be worth when bargaining for one :)

Thanks again.

If you can get a 570 used for a few buck more then the used 480 i would do a 570 for sure they are equals but 570s overclock better and use less power.

What others have said - this seems like a good deal (though you are using used equipment so make sure you trust the seller). Also, assuming the $180 is the price to your house, no shipping - this would be a good deal.

Thanks for your input everyone. I've decided to hold out for a used GTX 570 instead; less noise and less power draw to deal with.

I would also snag a 7850 for $230. Good eye clone.

That is a great deal, and it's quite tempting actually. It's just over my $200 budget unfortunately, especially once you throw taxes on top :(

I have an offer for a used 570 now for $200, which is just slightly more than the 480 I was considering earlier.

They're selling a sapphire version for $233 http://www.directcanada.com/products/?s ... e=SAPPHIRE which comes with a wicked looking cooler, so I'd say it isn't all that bad :)

It is really tempting to go with that instead, but the extra cost over what I can get used just dosen't sit well. I'd probably go for it if the new cards were offering DirectX 12 support, or some major future proofing change. I like that it comes with 2GB of vram, that's worth a little extra. I hear mods (for Skyrim especially) can push vram usage sky high, and easily exceed 1gb.

The one thing a new card will likely come with is a warranty, which may (or may not) make up for the difference in price between used and new in the long run.
