G530 SB vs i3 2125

Sun Jun 10, 2012 6:47 am

Well i upgraded my cpu from a sandy based 2.4ghz DC g530 celeron to a 3.3ghz DC w/HT i3 2125 and the difference is like night and day......very pleased with the performance bump....for the most part it is like having a sandy based 2.4 ghz quad core but faster in single and double threaded apps with its higher clockspeed extra 1mb l3 cache with 12 way over 8 way, and AVX. To be honest i not sure what avx does but if i need it i have it. 119$ at newegg minus a 50$ giftcard....so it was a great 69$ upgrade....I have been playing with it more then my 2600k tower:)

Its like having 2 g530s but better, idle temps are a couple degrees cooler and load a couple hotter at 47c with 72 degree room and looping cinebench 5 times.

Everything is much snappier including bootup is drastically improved.

If you want a htpc with a lil balls or a cheap gaming cpu if you get the cpu for a deal the 2120 or 2125 are great chips.

What are you doing that you notice that much difference? I've built quite a few Celeron G530 and Pentium G630 machines for people and in using them, don't feel that every day activities are any slower than my i5 2500K at stock clocks. I just didn't think that the CPU was any sort of bottleneck at all in anything but gaming or media encoding.

This is exactly what I've done. In fact, I've thought about ditching my PhII 875 and moving my htpc guts into my desktop. Its been a very pleasant surprise how powerful the little i3 is.

Well i do not think it is my imagination that the computer boots faster, programs load faster. Just a example when downloading on the g530 on a wired connection with fios and 43MBps connection, cpu usage was up to 50% or higher, now i can download files and play d3 at the same time, where i could not do it before.

I would not make up a skewed observation, sure the g530 is a snappy cpu but the 2120or 2125 i3 is a good bit more snappy with a 900mhz clockspeed advantage and HT. The 2120 and 2125 have the same clockspeeds but the 2125 has hd3000 over the hd2000 IGPs not thati am using it with a hd 6570 clocked to a 6670 but with the LProfile ddr3 bobo mem bandwidth.

Here is a direct performance comparison of almost every use/programs possible with a discrete 6670 or the IGP of each cpu

Oh, I'm not doubting your observations. I was just curious what you were doing that you were feeling that much of an increase. I also bring up the value proposition. $125 for the 2120, $150 for the 2125. A Pentium G620 is $49.99 at MicroCenter and the Celeron is $39.99. I don't think theres really much comparison when you take cost into account. Also, an i5 2310 costs a mere $20 more than the i3.

Corrado I forgot to mention i have to stay at 65 watts. That because i am sporting a huge 220watt slim psu in the H61 based gateway slim tower with a LP asus 6570 video card overclocked to 860 core and 1050 mem, But it uses ddr3.But i am running at the same clocks as a 6670. The 6570 and 6670 use the same turks chip with 480 shaders. Just the 6670 is clocked at 850 mhz, the 6570 is clocked at 650. I know i have a memory bottleneck without gddr5.

I also plan on upgrading my GPU to a Low profile 7750 from sapphire or anyone else that releases one and they use no PCIe power connector they will get all the power from the pci slot. On top of that sapphires will be clocked at standard 7750 speeds and gddr5 mem.
So it will out perform the gt640 kelper card.

With the i5 2310 quad with no HT using 95 watts or 32% more power. If you compare the 2 chips performance wise that 32% extra wattage compared to performance surprisingly has the 2125 beating the i5 2310 in 6 or 7 benchmarks of the 30+ benchmarks. Along with that 75% of the benchmarks it is faster in are well below the 32% power difference. Check it out, its pretty amazing.

Comparing Newegg/other etailer prices to Microcenter's insane in-store only prices? I see what you did there..

Insane or not, I can get it for that price, no combo necessary. Even at Newegg prices, the Celeron is $49.99 and the G620 is $63.99. Its still more than double the cost to go to the i3 2120 from the Celeron and just shy of double for the Pentium. Again, I'm not saying theres not a noticable difference, but that extra $70+ goes a LONG way towards building a low end box. That covers a cheap motherboard + 4GB RAM.

True, it's not that much of a difference, but you still shouldn't use B&M only prices at Microcenter just to make your point look better.

I don't think their prices are in-store only are they? Their site appears to be broken right now, so I can't check. I never mail ordered because theres one 20 minutes from here that I just goto.

Years of reading 'deals' forums has taught me that yes, their good CPU prices are always B&M only...at least I've never seen a time when they can be mail ordered, if there has been it's extremely rare. Maybe you weren't aware of just how good MC CPU deal prices are (even if it's a small amount in this case for higher-end CPUs it is not such a small amount), but the point is at least be consistent in your price source.

Holy crap, the G530 at MC is $34.99 now. They don't have the 2120 but the 2125 is $119.99. Still more than 2x the cost of the Pentium G620.

Microcenter's excellent CPU pricing is in store only. If it wasn't the case then I would have jumped on a number of their deals over the years but since there isn't one within 200 miles of me I couldn't take advantage.

vargis14, faster booting and program loading is an odd thing to see with just a CPU upgrade. Those are limited by your hard drive performance. It's also odd that you'd see anywhere near 50% CPU utilization from high network activity.. 43Mbps (you don't get 43 MB per second) isn't anywhere close to demanding on a ethernet connection. I hate to say it but I think you had an unknown issue with your past configuration. For just surfing the web and office type work you shouldn't be able to tell the difference between the G530 and a 2600K.
