i3-2100 Temperature Problem

Mon Jun 18, 2012 2:34 pm

Hi

Ive been upgrading my PC recently
Atm my setup is:
i3-2100
MSI HD 6850
8GB Kingston Dual Channel

Been playing Diablo 3 and BF3 mostly.
When i first started to play Diablo 3 everything worked smoothly with medium settings and 1600x900 resolution. (Back then i had a low budged GPU, Nvidia GT 240)
But after i upgraded to MSI HD 6850 its been annoying and disapointing. Game lags/freezes every 5 seconds, and keeps doing this even if i set resolution down and all setting to low.

Ok so the other game i like to play is BF3, from start the game beeing doing the same thing as with Diablo 3. Laging/Freezing every 5 seconds.
So now i updated my GPU with the 12.6 Beta Driver and somehow it worked smoonthly untill i THINK my CPUs temperature hits above 100 celsius(checked with HWmonitor).

So my big question and problem is. Could it be my CPU that is getting too hot and thats why the games starts to lag/freeze? Or could it be some other problem.
And if its the heat, would it help if i bought a new Cooler for the CPU?

I would be very kind if someone could give me some advice fast, cause i will order a new Cooler Fan for my CPU first thing tomorrow if that will help.

It's very possible that your i3 is being down clocked because of high temps. The TJmax (max temp) on i3s is about 95C. If the temp gets this high then the chip will throttle itself to protect against thermal damage. In your case, it seems likely that this is what's happening.

Do you overclock? If not there is no reason that your CPU should be getting this high, but an aftermarket cooler will likely solve your problem.

No i dont overclock as i don't know how to do that for starters =) Well am going to buy a new Cooler for sure.

Is there any sort of software that can "check" the setting for my CPU or something like this?

i have a i3-2100 and also run the integrated vga. When I used the stock cooler that came with the cpu I received a reading of about 70C at load. Before you go and waste some money make sure all the fans are working and that the orginal heatsink is seated properly. Also try to get some Arcitc Silver 5 thermal paste to use so you drop a few degrees. The stock cooler should be sufficient with this unoverclockable chip.

agreed, sounds like thermal throttling. as you cannot overclock the 2100, i would say there is almost no point buying a 3rd party cooler, and I think a re-mount would solve this as i3s don't tend to run hot at all.
take a look at these if you need some guidance;

Agreed, CoreTemp or OpenHardwareMonitor will both keep a track of maximum temperature as you're playing.

Also make sure your power supply is not lacking in power for your new video card, more so if your temps on your cpu are ok.

Well bought a new Cooler for the CPU today, and it helped alot. At 100% Load its stays under 60 celsius.
But but :P next problem was the GPU now it is overheating. I removed the heatsink and put some new TIN.
So far noticed that the GPUs fan had 1 screw loose, odd! :S Ill check in again after tests.

Well after a few rounds playing, CPU stays now under 60c and GPU stays under 70c.
Seems the New TIN helped alot and the screw reattached :P darn MSI lazy bums.
I guess new TIN for the CPU could have fixed the problem too!

Thanks for help!

I've had the same concerns with a Core i3-2120 here. I paired it with an Intel DH67BL mobo and it's using the stock HSF. I've noticed idle temps at around 60C. Ambient room temp is around 32C. If the Sandy Bridge design is so energy efficient, why is this i3 running hotter than my Phenom II X4, which idles at just 35C? Even reseating the heatsink didn't help. Now I see other people experiencing high temps with their SBs. I gotta wonder whether Intel's silicon isn't as stellar after all as they seem in reviews, or Intel is simply bundling worse-than-crap HSFs with their chips. I think review sites should look into this.

Perhaps I should get an FX after all and see for myself how it compares to the i3 here.
