New build check

Tue Jun 19, 2012 3:23 pm

I'm in the process of overhauling a computer and would like to run the new build by my fellows here at TR.

i52500k
ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3
G.SKILL Sniper Low Voltage Series 2x 4GB -Model F3-12800CL9D-8GBSR2-

These are the only parts being added to the current computer. All other hardware will be transfered to the new chassis. I'm only posting because of the large selection of motherboards to choose from and the fact that I have never owned an ASRock product.

I would expect those components to work fine together.

Are you near a Micro Center? They have unbeatable in-store deals on the Core i5-3570K with Z77 motherboards.
Edit: Nevermind. I see in another thread that you've already indirectly taken advantage of that deal. 8)

If you're rebuilding, now might be a good time to add an SSD.

Would you consider the $107½ ASRock Z77 Pro3 or $117½ Z77 Pro4-M or the $110 Gigabyte GA-Z77-DS3H or $115 GA-Z77M-D3H in place of the $128 Z68 motherboard?

I jumped on the SSD bandwagon some time ago so that isn't an issue. As for the Z77 Pro3 board, that is quite a nice deal at $99. Newegg shows them having most of the same features and ports. Any other clear advantages you know of?

On another note, I do not have a spending limit on this build. I am perfectly willing to buy a more expensive mobo provided the added cost is backed up by usable/useful features.

Some of the benefits of going with a Z77 motherboard is that they come with Lucid Virtu MVP, native USB3.0 (IVB CPUs only), and PCIe 3.0(IVB CPUs only). Native USB3.0 support means you don't have to install drivers for USB3.0 drives to work (aka you can install your OS from a USB3.0 flash drive!! I did it, and it was aaaawesome) PCIe 3.0 doesn't have much benefit yet as far as GPUs are concerned since even GPUs like the GTX690 can't utilize much more than (about) 8 lanes of PCIe2.0. It does allow motherboard manufacturers the ability to allocate additional bandwidth to peripherals though.

I have a new ASRock Z77 Pro4-m and I'm liking it very much. I would rather have purchased the Z77 Extreme4-m had Microcenter carried it. Anyway, I followed ASRock motherboards since the socket 1155 (Sandy Bridge) launch so my decision was very premeditated. The only thing I don't like is that the fan controls aren't as granular as Asus' motherboards, but that was something I was/am willing to live with for the significantly lower pricetag. With some careful fan speed adjustments, my computer is very quiet and the fans rarely spin up to audible levels. As with any motherboard purchase, make sure you're getting all the slots (including bandwidth to those slots), rear ports and features that you want/need.

Well, I don't own any USB3 devices and I doubt my 6870 will really need much more than PCIe2. But this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157296 has a lot of USB headers and ports and that's quite a handy feature.

If you're not overly sensitive to cost, you might like an Asus motherboard. Do you have any legacy PCI devices? My Asus P8Z77-M Pro has 4 PCIe slots, but doesn't support PCI.

Do you need an aftermarket CPU cooler like the $40 Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo?

I do not have any PCI devices to speak of but I can't really justify the added cost when compared to the ASRock Z77.

The ASRock Pro4 is $128 from newegg after shipping. I think spending an extra $7 on the Extreme4 model is worth while.

That's a good suggestion. The Pro4 lists at $119 for me so it's a bit cheaper, and has a couple extra USB ports where the Extreme4 sacs them for 2 extra headers. I would really like to not use the headers but I think I can dig out some expansion hardware. I'll add your suggestion to my wishlist. I don't think I'll miss $14. Thanks :)

EDIT:

So here is what I have.

i5 2500k
HD6870 (Already have this in my current rig)
ASRock Z77 Extreme4
G.SKILL Sniper Low Voltage Series (2 x 4GB) DDR3 1600
Corsair Nova 64GB SSD
Seagate 1.5 TB Drive for storage/Game installs

Now one more little thing... I had planned to keep my current PSU which I THINK is a 500 or 550w Coolermaster. I've had it for quite some time so I'll double check the unit when I get home. Anyway, I'm pondering buying this unit >> http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817171039 I think my current PSU is plenty capable of powering the new build, but I would like to get your opinions on this.

Ay, but the Extreme4 has two PCIe 3.0 x16 slots (x8/x8 in dual mode) and sacs a PCI slot to give you an extra PCIe x1 (PCI is dead anyway), and has better audio, 4 USB3.0 ports on the rear cluster instead of two, has better VRM cooling, AND gives you 8 + 4 power phases instead of 4+2.....absolutely worth the extra $14

The current PSU should be quite sufficient. If you really need to upgrade, you could go for a more efficient PSU, like the Antec Neo or any 80Plus Seasonic model.

Funny thing about that. I had forgot about buying an Antec Earthwatts 650w PSU about a year ago. I do wonder if it's able to push 2 6870's though.

If you plan to overclock your CPU (I assume that because you've chosen a CPU with a "k" in the end) then it would be wise of you to purchase an aftermarked cooler for your CPU. Have you considered that or do you already use one?

I will be getting by on a stock cooler for about a week. I do have an aftermarket cooler but It is getting retired. I'm digging through newegg looking for something that suits me.

You can't go wrong with the highly esteemed Cooler Master Hyper 212+. The only heatsinks that really beat it are double the cost, and even then they are only better by 3-4C. It's also fairly quiet. Check out the charts over at FrostyTech where they have tested just about every heatsink on the market.

Both my brother and I are using it with good success. I'm running an i5-2500K @ 4.5ghz that runs at about 68C (and around 64C in winter) full load. He has a Phenom II X4 945 @ 3.8ghz (not sure about temps).

Alright, so here is the build so far. This includes new parts and parts from the old build.

Antec Earthwatts 650w PSU (From the old system)
Antec P180 case
Intel i5 2500k
ASRock Z77 Extreme4
G.Skill Sniper low voltage DDR3 1600
HiS iceQ X HD 6870
64GB Corsair Nova SSD
1.5TB Seagate
36GB WD Raptor (Old HDD for a Linux install)
Cooler Master Hyper 212+ (Caught it for $29 with free shipping and a free HDMI cable)

The only 2 parts I am waiting on is the CPU (Should arrive Wednsday) and CPU cooler(Should arrive Tuesday)

I think I'll pick up a 2nd 6870 in a couple of months. From what I gather I'll need to pick up a slightly higher wattage PSU, correct me if I'm wrong because I am only borderline sure of this. It has been a long time since I had a crossfire setup.

TR observed 449 W with an i7-965. Other sites mention 421 W, 427 W, 449 W.

Plugging your system into my favorite power supply calculator I'm getting 560W suggested PSU with 20% capacitor aging added on. Your 650W unit should work just fine.

Yep 650W should be plenty. I am running an almost identical system on a 550W unit (and a much less highly-regarded brand than Antec). I'm also running a decent overclock which requires more power.

Re: New build check

Well guys, I have had this build for about a month now. Time for an update.

The motherboard went out on me yesterday. I tried to boot it up when I got home from work and I could not get a post screen. I tried a few things like resetting the bios, disconnecting unessential parts, ect ect. the debug LED gave me the code 62 which is listed as IDE detect. After swapping out ram sticks one at a time I have found that one stick is now dead and with the bad stick removed it will show a post screen. It will not boot from any device be it DVD, SSD, or HDD. I swapped in a stick from another computer to see if it will boot but it still gives disk read errors. Thankfully the motherboard came with a free 1 year replacement warranty from newegg and they are also going to exchange the RAM. So I'm going to be out of a working computer for a week or so but newegg is shipping out new parts while giving me time to pack up and ship back the old ones. Gotta love their customer service.

Sorry to hear about the mobo & RAM dying on you. Usually if they are going to die prematurerly it's either that they are DOA or die within the first three months or so. Were you running it overclocked when it died?

Nope. I hav't had the need to overclock it. I stay away from over clocking until the system get's a bit old.
