Once you found out, you dropped the dime because you are a good person and had no knowledge of this before hand. Get something in writing if possible that you did the right thing

As for the software piracy, one quick and easy way is to anonymously report it to the BSA. The BSA can be a total bunch of a-holes, but in some cases where you are dealing with scumbags you probably want to sic the BSA on these guys.
