Your top 5 Playstation Classic Games

Thu Jul 05, 2012 1:23 pm

I fired up some of my old Playstation 1 games over the holiday and it brought back great memories. My top 5 games for the PS1 are Final Fantasy Tactics, Final Fantasy 7, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy 9, and Medievil. I know lots of Final Fantasy games but they were so addictive! I'm curious what everyone else have for a top 5.
Intel i7-7700, MSI Trident, 32GB DDR4 2133mhz, Geforce 1060GTX, and Samsung Evo 1TB.

The original Disgaea was on PS2, and all of the series has only been on PS2, PS3, PSP, or Vita.

My list very closely mirrors Hawkwing's, though.

FF VII
FF IX
FFT

but then here is where we part:

Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete (in every way an improvement on what was already a Sega CD classic)
Metal Gear Solid

For a system with just a buttload of great games, the top few seems to be similar for lots of people.

Xenogears
FF Tactics
Tales of Destiny
FF VII
Wild Arms

edit: Breath of Fire III was one of my favorite games of all time. It might be above xenogears. It was fun, the genre was new to me, and the game was challenging. Man, I'm gonna have to go home and get my emulator going. I have an exbox wireless receiver so I can use my xbox controllers on my pc. Score!

Twisted Metal 2
Gran Tourismo

There is no #3... (though I did play FF7 on PC, and thoroughly enjoyed it)

I was seriously considering Gran Turismo for my 5th spot.

I was too. It had a great soundtrack with it as well!

Soul Edge was PS1. Soul Calibur was Dreamcast + arcade (on hardware that is a close relative of the PS1, but not on the PS1 itself nonetheless).

Although I will echo you sentiment for it being on a top-5 list. It's on my Dreamcast list at #2 behind Crazy Taxi and ahead of NFL 2K1, MvC 2, and Capcom vs. SNK 2 (import).

1) Raiden DX
2) Castlevania SotN
3) Langrisser I & II
4) Gran Turismo 2
5) Armored Core Master of Arena

Kind of tricky to keep it to 5 entries, it really turned into a great system and some amazing games were coming out from '97 or so right up until the PS2 release.

  • Soul Kalibur (any of them)
  • Gran Turismo (they were all better than anything else of their time)
  • Tekken 3
  • There were other games worth playing on a PS2?!

Sorry, 4/5 is all I can manage, and item 4 is dubious at best.... ;)

1. Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain (Surprised no one mentioned this, man I loved this game)
2. Tomb Raider (the first game where it was more of a discovery/puzzle game rather than the infinite enemy shooting fest it has become)
3. Metal Gear Solid (Snaaaaaakkkke!)
4. Gran Turismo 2
5. Mary-Kate and Ashley: Magical Mystery Mall

.. Ok #5 is a lie. Actually it would be Final Fantasy 7 (bitter-sweet, I was using one of those non-standard multi-page memory cards and lost my save of 120+ hours, the reason I have never gone back to a console JRPG since)

Honorable Mention: Tekken (all), Tenchu, Twisted Metal 2, and Warhawk (live action cut scenes FTW)

I wanted to put the Resident Evil series in my list but just too many good games! It was actually the RE games that made me get a PS1. I unfortunately purchased an N64 first then bought the PS1. The N64 was still a great console but the PS1 had so many things going for it.

If we go by how many times I've gone back to them...

Castlevania: SOTN, FF7, Megaman X4, Spyro 3(I 100%ed that game 4 times in a row when I got it. I loved it that much. Haven't been able to beat it since, and I've had my copy for nearly twelve years), Spider-Man.

If we go by sheer overall enjoyment, it changes dramatically.

SOTN, Megaman X4, Spyro 3, Xenogears(My pick for overall best jRPG ever) and Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain(To date, it's the best voice acted game).

Yes, changing 2/5ths of the list is enough to qualify for "dramatically." :P

As you can figure out, my gaming tastes back then were more for Japanese games. Nowadays I tend to play PC games so it's usually western games that get played.
