Android memory management

Sat Jul 14, 2012 12:27 pm

I have a 2.3 phone. Looking to get my one too. Just curious if the memory is managed any better in ICS. Does 4GB of internal memory mean that it is all available for apps or whatever?

4 gig of internal memory sounds like flash storage not ram. As far as I'm aware the Galaxy S III has the most ram of any phone and it has 2 gigs.

Yeah I'm taking about system memory. I have 150mb now which is quickly eaten up by apps. And the ones that don't support moving to sd are some of the bigger ones. And the stupid google ones that aren't uninstallable...

Time to root that thing and install Titanium Backup, which will both move apps to the SD card and clear out the Google cruft.
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

It depends on the phone in question. I've seen it a couple different ways. On my G2x, I have around 1.5GB of dedicated app storage and 5.7GB of other storage. The OS calls it "SD Card" which is stupid because it's not an SD card. The rest of the ~1.5GB missing of the 8GB total is eaten up by system partition, recovery, etc.

That 5.7 is available to move apps to it, and it's also primary storage for the camera, and it can be mounted by Windows.

The best thing (IMO) that Titanium Backup does is integrate the system app updates into the system partition, clearing up space on the /data partition (on my phone, the 1.5GB I mentioned above). Once apps like Gmail, Facbeook, Twitter, etc. updated themselves they exist in two places. Using TiB I was able to clear up around 120MB of space by integrating system apps. Not that it matters; I had around 40% free.
I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.

@Ned Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a custom ROM for the Wildfire S on Virgin Mobile. Not popular enough I assume.

@dancinjack I have all of the apps that support it moved to the data storage partition, but not all apps support it. That app only automates the process, doesn't force those that don't support it. It also complicates things like updates and shortcuts.

@derFunk I assume I just have to browse random user forums around the 'Net to find out how a particular phone I'm looking into does it's partitioning.

I don't know if this does the same thing as what you describe above, so I guess you'll just have to give it a shot.

I'm not sure if you knew this, but the CDMA variant of the Wildfire S is also known by the codenames marvelc and marvelct. You might try searching the XDA Forums using those as a starting point. It appears that both the marvelc and the marveltc are included in the Cyanogenmod 9 Alpha, so perhaps all hope isn't lost.
Heavy is good, heavy is reliable. If it doesn't work, you can always hit them with it.

I'm also interested if it's possible to update the Wildfire S to newer Android version, like 4.x?

As far as I understand, HTC now officially supports unlocking the phone in order to get root permissions or something.

Also, I don't know is it just me, but it feels as if the phone gets slower over time. It used to be fast, and now it laggs on button presses, like unlock.
