Recommend me an hard drive

Postposted on Thu Jul 19, 2012 4:56 am

Hi all

I need a 2Tb drive to store 1080p movies for my LG tv, it has an usb port, I just need to plug in the drive and watch the movies on my living room

I'm going to use this external enclosure by the way:

Nice and cheap :P

So help me to choose between this drives, the most important characteristic might be the noise levels, performance isn't going to be a issue I guess, it's just to play movies :)

SEAGATE BARRACUDA GREEN 2TB 5900RPM 64MB SATA III 3.5 [ST2000DL003]

SAMSUNG SPINPOINT F4 2TB 5400RPM 32MB SATA II 3.5 [ST2000DL004]

SEAGATE BARRACUDA 7200.14 2TB 7200RPM 64MB 3.5" SATA III [ST2000DM001]

WESTERN DIGITAL CAVIAR GREEN 2TB 7200RPM 64MB SATA II 3.5 [WD20EARS]

WESTERN DIGITAL AV-GP 2TB 5400RPM 64MB SATA II 3.5 [WD20EURS]

SEAGATE PIPELINE HD 2TB 5900RPM 64MB 3.5" SATA II [ST2000VM002]

I've putted all these because they are in my price range, between 110€ and 120€

Any thoughts and experiences?

I own a Spinpoint F3 and F4. Both are great drives. I recommend them wholeheartedly.

I own a Western Digital Caviar Green (EARS) and have used it for over 18 months. It runs cool and works great. I would avoid any of the 7200 RPM HDDs because those do not fit your needs. Anything resembling an HTPC (including just an external HDD) will work great with a cool and quiet 5400 RPM "Green" drive.

BTW, have you considered a 3TB HDD?

I was inclined to the EARS because of the reviews concerning it's low power and noise, just glad someone as an experience with this specific drive

Well, the 3Tb takes me to the 160€ price range so I wasn't thinking about them for now :-?

I am pretty sure that all WD Green drives are 5400 RPM. That's how they get them cool, quiet, and cheaper compared to their faster Blue and Black drives. But speaking of Greens, I've had a 1TB from WD for a couple years now with no trouble.
