Saving a system till Haswell...What's your story?

Thu Jul 19, 2012 11:58 pm

My original system:
Q9450
Asus P5K-E Wifi Ap-solo
Vista 64-bit
4gb ddr2
8800gt
500GB WD caviar black

Since I originally built it have added:
1 TB WD caviar black (Steam drive)
8800gt - > 260gtx 216 -> 560ti

Today I am about to add:
1TB WD caviar black
240GB Corsair force 3 SSD
Windows 7 64-bit
Intel Gigabit NIC (mobo NIC died!)

I think this should hold me out till Haswell. (Where I'll get a mobo/cpu and maybe gpu upgrade with a case + modular psu and some ddr3 but carry across the SSD and HDD's)

Anyone else able to bridge the gap further or similar to me skipping Sandy and Ivy bridge?
Core i7 4770K | eVGA GTX1080 FTW ACX 3.0 | 16GB DDR3 2133mhz | Asus Z87-PLUS | Corsair HX650 | Fractal Define R4 | Samsung 840 Pro 256GB | Windows 10 x64

Original since 2008:
Core 2 Duo E8400 (3 GHz dual core)
Asus P5K-E
4GB DDR2
8800GT
320GB Seagate (carry over from 2006 build)

upgrades a month ago:
Added Crucial M4 SSD 128GB as OS boot drive.
8800GT (dead) - > HD 7770

Ivy bridge interested me before it came out but now lost interest.
No plan to upgrade. Long Live...!

See Sig - but my Q6600 is hardly stable above 3.5GHZ this days, maybe its showing age now.

I intend to use it for as long as possible. I hardly play games this days (Warcraft 3 sessions once in a week may be) and for daily task my CPU can eat anything that i use daily.

Long story short - I think i will use it for further 5 years.

EDIT: OT: I bought my first android smart phone - "Optimus 2X" 2 years back, and i think dual core CPU is more than enough to carry it for years to come. Let's see how it goes, but the currently i have yet to find any game or application that has slowed my cynogenmod based smartphone.

I will get a completely new system when my current chip is woefully inadequate which isn't going be happening anytime soon.

The reason is pretty simple. It is a PITA for coders to fully harness the power of four threads or more. The MEGAHURTZ race ended years ago while it is getting harder and harder for Intel/AMD to net more IPC out of their chips. Their current focus is power efficiency. IB and SB are remarkably power efficient, and Pilediver is no slouch.

There's still excitement in computer hardware.

It is just not found in the desktop space.

The current rage is found in either portables or servers/workstation level hardware. It has never been a better time for number crunching and render farms. It is incredible to find hardware that can rival the computing power of yesterday's supercomputing clusters and it is "affordable".
16GiB of memory or more is no longer limited to exotic hardware platforms. You have interconnects that can effortlessly stream GBs of data within minutes (Thunderbolt, SSDs and 10Gbps). Even for the home server crowd, you have a large array of DIY NAS solutions that require little effort to manage and setup.

Portables on the other hand can pull off what desktop used to do in early 2000s while having a battery life of a few hours and they can pull it off without weighting as much as a brick. Touchscreen UIs and solutions have become mature enough that it a non-savvy computer user can get around without too much difficulty.

Holding on to the dual-core Core 2 system until next year:
E8400 moderately OC'd to 3.6GHz
8GB o' RAM (good ol' DDR2 1066)
128 GB M3 SSD (bought in 2010, best investment I've made for this PC, rest of my data is on a storage server)
GeForce 8800GT (yes, it's that old and I can *still* play non-crazy games with it on Linux)
Asus Xonar DX (going to go into the new PC too..woot)

Like you I'm planning a Haswell upgrade. We'll see when and what comes out. While the GPU should be better, a desktop system will
still require a good GPU. If AMD can get its act together on Linux drivers I'd be happy to buy one, but more realistically I'll probably
be getting some flavor of the "big Kepler" or maybe Maxwell (but I'm expecting Maxwell to be delayed as is usual for Nvidia).
4770K @ 4.7 GHz; 32GB DDR3-2133; Officially RX-560... that's right AMD you shills!; 512GB 840 Pro (2x); Fractal Define XL-R2; NZXT Kraken-X60
--Many thanks to the TR Forum for advice in getting it built.

2005 build:
Opteron 150
3GB DDR400 ECC/Reg
X800XL (256MB)
WD740GD (Boot)
WD4000KD (Rip/Encode/Scratch disk)
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz
Toshiba DVD+/-RW (IDE)
Windows XP Pro
Cooler Master Real Power 450W (~75% efficient)
Xclio WindTunnel Full Tower

Currently in the process of collecting parts for a fall/winter complete rebuild.
I've already got:
OS - Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Optical - Samsung DVD+/-RW (SATA)
Power - Rosewill Capstone 87+ 550W (non modular)
Boot - Samsung 830 series 128GB
Rip/Encode/Scratch - Samsung 830 series 128G

What I need/waiting for/drop in price:
Case: Cooler Master HAF 912 (I've already got one with another system - excellent)
Cooling: I'll need 4 x 120mm fans of decent quality (no sleeve/rifle bearing crap), but no need until I've got the case
MB: Unknown right now
CPU: Unknown right now
CPU cooling: I'll deal with stock (at least initially)
Memory: Unknown right now
Video card: Radeon HD 7850 w/2GB (the longer I wait, the more likely that it'll be at a price point I wouldn't mind paying for)
Temp Holding drive: either a WD 500GB VR333 or an incredible sale to allow me to pick up a 512GB SSD (marvell or Samsung based)

My plan is to have it built by Christmas, at the latest. Hey, I've waited 7 years, whats a few more months, right? The Opteron will be re-purposed to server duty.
Workstation: Phenom II X4 965
Every-Day: Athlon II X4 630
Servers: Athlon X2 BE-2400, A8-7600
Gym: Opteron 150

There is excitement...even in the desktop sphere, but some of us don't need to drop $300 on a new 7870 since our current GTX 260 is working just fine <.<

That, and there are a lot of cool things going on in the mobile world. Ivy Bridge has created a lot of fairly powerful ultrabooks with okay/decent battery life, so getting some mobile power is pretty appealing, and then you can look at the smartphone races where Microsoft is a distant third to Android and iOS, both of which are doing cool things.

Personally I'm running (and I can't look since I'm not at home >.<):

i7 920
6GB DDR3
GTX 260
250GB main drive
1TB storage drive

This is pretty solid for me. I think I will wait until good SSDs get closer to a $0.50/GB mark and build a new system with at least a 500GB SSD and Sweet Spot+ components.
On second thought, let's not go to TechReport. It's infested by crypto bull****.

I just upgraded my laptop from 7 year old Thinkpad R51 which housed a Pentium M to a new Thinkpad T420 sporting a SB i7, so in that case I didn't skip the current procs.

My desktop is, I think, three years old now, and I still have plenty of headroom on it. I probably won't look at upgrading it for another four years or so.

You're both right. Low power computing is exciting, ARM emerging is exciting, and servers/workstations have always been more fun then desktops. (I've always been a server junkie, so that statement is biased.)

Part of the fun for me has always been to get the max performance out of low end equipment. You learn a lot about how stuff works when you can easily hit the limits.

It's fun to watch ARM grow into an alternative platform. In the 90s there was PPC, MIPS, and SPARC (SPARC is still alive) as alternative platforms, but they have never edged into the mainstream with bare boards the way ARM is doing. There are problems, but that's part of fun in seeing the hardware mature.

Re-purposing desktop stuff for server duty is interesting because of the problems it introduces. Desktop stuff in inherently unreliable, compared to the over built server stuff, so it's interesting figuring out how to work around that.

I'm really interested in the Fusion-IO stuff, and I would be interested in seeing what I could do with it.

What i'm sitting on now:

i7 860 @ stock
Gigabyte P55 mobo w/USB3
Small SSD for boot
>3.5TB of HDD storage
HD7850
8GB DDR3 1600
Xonar D1
Corsair 650TX

I'm planning on, doesn't mean it will happen though, upgrading when Haswell comes out. I hope to make my system look like this:

New mATX case
~3.0GHz quad core Haswell
I'll probably keep my current RAM. 8GB DDR3 1600
I'd like to get >= 256GB SSD
Keep my mechanical storage probably
Asus mATX "pro" motherboard most likely
I'll keep my 7850
Probably going to get a new sound card. Don't know what yet.
Keep the PSU

At this point it's much more about power efficiency and form factor than anything else. I want a small, quiet system. My i7 860 is plenty powerful enough for what I do at home in most cases. I'm pretty excited to build my next system. What I have now is the first system I thought was pretty close to "perfect" as it could be, for me, when I built it and I only hope to improve here in April/May of next year. Yay mATX!
i7 6700K - Z170 - 16GiB DDR4 - GTX 1080 - 512GB SSD - 256GB SSD - 500GB SSD - 3TB HDD- 27" IPS G-sync - Win10 Pro x64 - Ubuntu/Mint x64 :: 2015 13" rMBP Sierra :: Canon EOS 80D/Sony RX100

I've got a 2.8GHz C2D in a laptop. I'm trying to decide between making a desktop with an E8400 or its ilk, and waiting a year or two for an ultrabook.

i7 920 24gb Ram
Asus
6X 1 Tb Hitachi/Samsungf3
2X 2 Tb Samsung something

Its funny when I saw the title of your post I knew exactly what you meant. Its my work and play computer ( I work from home) and if they were to release a 2011 board with thunderbolt I'd probably leap to that. But I don't expect any 2011 thunderbolt boards so I've re adjusted to waiting for LGA 2013 or its equivalent. Just not enough bang for the buck yet over what I've got. Its a relief to not spend money though, its kind of a weird thing to complain about.
Post here today suggests we may only have to wait until April. Doesn't seem so far off anymore.

As you can see from my sig, I didn't make it to Haswell, although I had all intentions to. My old system was a C2D E8400 that I just couldnt stretch long enough even with a SSD, a USB 3.0 add-in card, a 3.6GHz overclock, and a 6850 to make it another year or more. (plus I had $300 burning a hole in my pocket) After all, it didn't take me long reading though this TR article to figure out that the benefits of moving up to Sandy/Ivy Bridge can give a huge boost especially to CPU limited games. Couldn't be happier with my current build though, it will last me AT LEAST 4 more years, with naught but a GPU upgrade in a year or two.
P.S. I love Lucid Virtu MVP also!

Haswell does make me contemplate the future of desktop computing though. With Intel focusing heavily on power savings and IGP performance, where is the next substantial computing performance gain going to come from, more widespread adoption of hybrid CPU/GPU computing? Should be interesting to see where we end up in the next few years. It seems like we're hitting a performance ceiling like we did back in the days of single core processors.

Yep, and I was just upgrading my system...? Just not everything, only the bits that were becoming key bottlenecks for my use case.
