Too late, Win8 RP got shredded today, the partitions will be re-sized and Linux Mint will take it's place, alongside Win7 which will be used for few rare non-cross platform programs.

There's no point in booting directly to the desktop in Windows 8 because there's no start menu and the alt-tabbing of traditional desktop apps is horrific.

Ever think about Mageia? I've heard some good things, but it is fairly new.

I tried Win8, I really wanted to like it, and it was almost perfect for an HTPC

The killer was that I couldn't get WMC installed :( I tried everything I could find, but in the end, I had to settle for going back to Win7...
