Corsair HX520W vs GTX670

Sat Jul 21, 2012 12:39 pm

Sorry for another "Is it big enough" thread but.

I have one of the original Corsair HX520W PSUs (circa 2006) that I am rather fond of due to it's quietness but have my eye on a Gigabyte GTX670 that has a published 550W minimum requirement.

Have noticed that the max draw from these cards appears around the 200W mark in reviews & would be running with a 125W 955BE so it looks OK to me.

Any thoughts?

Should be ok, the only thing that may be of concern is the drop-off of capacity due to age. If you have a Kill-A-Watt (a must-have device if you are geeky enough to be concerned about these things), you can monitor the power draw. After all it is about the total power supplied by the 12V rails, not the overall 550W. Since the 670 uses 2 6-pin connectors, we are looking at 225W max potential power draw from the video card. The HX520 is capable of 480W across the 3 rails. Even if the drop-off is 20% it should still be good enough combined with a 100W CPU draw.

Edit: It has been a while so I should probably re-post the 2 required readings, instead of just relying on calculators that almost always over-estimate:

The Model M is not for the faint of heart. You either like them or hate them.

Yep, should be more than fine. I ran an HX620 for years and had no noticeable maximum output dropoff after 3 years or so, although to be fair I never pushed it more than 80% or so of maximum. But I don't recall noticing any additional voltage sag in Speedfan (although again my memory is fuzzy).

One sample is hardly representative, but again it's a quality PSU and shouldn't have any issues.

You'll have plenty of power to spare, even with some drop-off. I doubt you'll breach 400w under load with your system.
