Optical drive + memory card reader

Postposted on Mon Jul 30, 2012 10:26 am

Hey guys,

Was wondering if it's possible to get a slim optical drive and a memory card reader with some sort of mount that will allow both to fit in a standard 5 1/4" optical drive bay?

Or even some sort of futeristic optical drive/memory card reader combo device! Does anything along these lines exist?

Basically i'm looking to put an SD card reader in my SFF PC but can't lose the optical drive.

Cheers..

Interesting post. I don't know of any combo drives myself, but I did stumble across this microSD card reader that is so small you probably wouldnt notice it plugged into a front USB port. Something like that might work?

Hrm interesting. I like that mounting bracket.. could definitely work with that.

However with optical drives still being necessary (imo) and memory cards being so cheap now, i'm surprised that there's combo optical/memory card device type thing on the market..

Google tells me that BTC made one almost 10 years ago, but couldn't find anything recent.

I agree, optical drives are still just necessary enough to be annoying, at least for the time being. They can't die soon enough IMO.

I rarely use my card reader anymore. I just plug the device into my computer with the included USB cable and transfer that way. Open up your device or dig out a cable...as long as you dont have too many devices with proprietary cables, I just leave my cable plugged into my computer all the time and stuff it back behind the computer when I'm done.

That and a slim optical drive/ card reader combo would probably be a pricey niche product. Most people that need/want both will have two dive bays available. (SFF HTPCs being the exception obviously) Looks like morphine has the winning entry.

Yeah optical media (at least in its current form) needs to die ASAP. I tried to go without one but got sick of digging out my slow external optical drive.

Anyways, think i'll go with that bracket. Thanks for the info guys.
