I agree, optical drives are still just necessary enough to be annoying, at least for the time being. They can't die soon enough IMO.
I rarely use my card reader anymore. I just plug the device into my computer with the included USB cable and transfer that way. Open up your device or dig out a cable...as long as you dont have too many devices with proprietary cables, I just leave my cable plugged into my computer all the time and stuff it back behind the computer when I'm done.
That and a slim optical drive/ card reader combo would probably be a pricey niche product. Most people that need/want both will have two dive bays available. (SFF HTPCs being the exception obviously) Looks like morphine has the winning entry.
