Change where Recycle Bin stores files?

Tue Jul 31, 2012 8:29 pm

With my latest build, I am sporting an SSD drive for the first time, I also have two 750GB storage drives for all the clutter and crap that I want to keep but not take up space on the SSD.

So I am wondering if there was a way to tell the Recycle Bin to store everything on one of the storage drives rather than the SSD?

I tend to let deleted crap sit in the recycle bin for a long time and I would rather not have it using up SSD space.

Shift+Delete.

Moving all of the other stuff is straightforward.

Seriously your post tells me nothing , can you be more specific?

I am implying that your issue is user error- your system has a limitation, in that you do not have a large enough SSD to be lazy about deleting things; your habit needs to change if your system doesn't.

Beyond that, you can go to the individual categorized folders inside your User directory- pictures, music, etc.- and literally tell them to move to another location. They're instantly and seamlessly mapped.

First off your make a somewhat insulating assumption, just because I asked the question to see if something was possible does not make me lazy.

I have already remapped all user directory folders and poked around with the Recycle Bin to see if it too could be remapped.

When I found nothing I thought I would come here and see if anyone knew of a way.

How this makes me lazy I don't know, but quite frankly your response says a lot more about you than my question says about me.

I'm not trying to be insulting at all, but it's hard not to read 'lazy' when your premise is 'I leave stuff in the recycle bin too long, and now I have a small hard drive, how can I fix this?' :).

Your entire premise is an assumption, I never said my SSD was small.

After intensive googleing, it seems no one has figured out to remap where the recycle bin stores files.

Why don't you just empty your recycle bin? Or move the files if you don't want to remove them.

That would be because the Recycle Bin is a place where files are moved, transiently, to give the user a chance to recover them without problems if they were mistakenly deleted. Moving them onto another disk basically means reading the entire file, writing it out again, and then deleting it from the original location. Slow, especially if the file in question is large or there are lots of files (consider that moving a file on the one volume just means creating a new directory entry and removing the original entry.)

I doubt, very much, that there is any way to do what you are asking. Live with it, or nuke the data completely; those are your two options.

You can't remap the recycle bin.

You can adjust the size of the recycle bin through it's properties.

The OP may be misunderstanding how file systems work.

When a file is deleted, the data doesn't go anywhere; the space is merely marked as available for reuse. Until that space is overwritten, it's possible to recover the old data and the Recycle Bin is just a user-friendly interface for this recovery. There is no separate storage involved.

Actually not true; What you are talking about is deletion (shift+delete) where the file system actually deletes the file and allocates the space as "free" as per your description. The recycle bin is a folder where items are moved to and compressed.

It is possible to move the recycle bin but the effort required to do this far outweighs its usefulness, involving registry hacks that get undone by all kinds of background processes in Windows anyway.
