P8Z77-V no POST, BIOS or signals

Sat Aug 11, 2012 8:43 am

brand new. everything is plugged in, leds on, fans spinning but no BIOS and POST start up. it didn't come with a speaker so i don't think i could hear any beeps. the monitor, keyboard and mouse aren't getting signals

i am not sure if it was my imagination but i do think i heard ticking sounds and smelled a bit of smoke while installing the cpu and hsf with the mobo placed on the cardboard box cover that came with it. or it may just be the smell of new computer hardware.

the mobo led was on so i don't understand

i can’t trust any technical service with expensive parts, maybe if it was oem i wouldn’t care as much.

MemOK! led lights up red, what does that mean? i cant see the cpu led because the hsf covers it, boot device led i believe was green and the flbk led wasn't on.

I had that problem to.. I reseated by Memory, and that got me to the next stage.. I had forgotten to connect the 8 pin EATX power cable. That also resulted in the same thing.

I also swear the first time I booted the machine up, I saw smoke coming from somewhere, but I couldn't trace it down, and everything seems to be working just fine..

I'm hoping this is just a bit of a typo - was there power to the motherboard when you installed the CPU/heatsink?

First thing to do is the usual new-build-not-posting solution: strip the machine down to basics. CPU installed with heatsink/fan, one stick of memory, graphics card (or even use the onboard Intel graphics if your board is capable), powersupply hooked up to the main 24-pin ATX connector and the 8-pin EPS12v connector (and graphics card if necessary). Don't even have any drives plugged in to start with. See if you can get it to post with a bare-bones configuration.

lol no i had everything installed and ready before powering anything on. i may try the barebones/breadboard thing but first i will try and fiddle with the RAM later on today

Just a shot in the dark, on my very first build I had forgot to put the standoffs in the case under the motherboard before I put the motherboard into the case, you absolutely need these or you could short your motherboard out on the metal case.

thankfully my case had listed exactly where the stand offs had to go for ATX form factor and they fitted the motherboard perfectly.

UPDATE: solved- i tested the RAM one at a time both were ok, then tried both (properly reseating them this time, doh!) and the red DRAM led turned off the POST splashed on screen and the keyboard, mouse and monitor got their signals.

a big thank you for being helpful guys

As a policy I always first-boot with the absolute minimal hardware, using a memtest thumbdrive and then leave it running memtest for a few hours (or overnight, usually). Memory errors are rare, but they usually show up right away and if you have one you don't know about and proceed with installing an OS you end up in an un-exitable maze of inexplicable errors. And it reduces the number of other things that can go wrong or that you need to check in cases like this.

This is a Z77 mobo and, I presume, an IB CPU so integrated graphics are all you need until you get everything else checked out (in fact I wouldn't install a GPU until I had the OS and all the other drivers installed and updated)

Have you looked in your manual? Page 2-14:
ASUS wrote:
MemOK! switch
Installing DIMMs that are incompatible with the motherboard may cause system boot failure, and the DRAM_LED near the MemOK! switch lights continuously. Press and hold the MemOK! switch until the DRAM_LED starts blinking to begin automatic memory compatibility tuning for successful boot.

The DRAM_LED also lights when the DIMM is not properly installed. Turn off the system and reinstall the DIMM before using the MemOK! function
That last point is the one I think most likely, and the one you should do first. DIMM slots in a new mobo can be tight and it's easy to get new DIMMs not quite fully seated. Hopefully the smoke you saw was just "new system" burn-off and not the result of a partial connections on one of the DIMMs. (Yet another reason to do a full memtest run before proceeding any further after you get to be BIOS)

That's always possible (and a common first-builder mistake) but the usual symptoms of that is the system failing to even power up (fans or anything). Easy to check, anyway.

UberGerbil, i will definitely follow your method (route) for my future builds. that is a really solid way of testing, i haven't seen this way of testing before

Oh, and one other thing for anyone who finds this thread... RTFM.. I ran into this when I assumed the color coded DIMM slots were matching, and installed memory into the same color slots. Turns out the manual states to use the adjacent slot (so different colored slot) when using 2 sticks of memory...

the manual for my mobo for two sticks recommended the A2 and B2 slots

I think that was the same as mine, but the DIMM slots were different colors.. not what I was expecting..

I concur, though I will say, I have only been into computers for about 10 or so years, I have yet to have the dreaded ram failure.

The worst things for me to diagnose, mostly for a lack of tools and extra parts have been 4 or 5 power supply failures.

God I hate those,lol.

I have the Deluxe version of that board and had the same problem. Indicator code on little motherboard LED showed it to be no installed memory. Took it out, reseated it, and it worked fine.

I don't like the new memory seats. The old ones seemed to be much better.
