$1400 Budget, and a list of must have's

Mon Aug 13, 2012 6:22 pm

My budget is $1400 CANADIAN (With taxes, taxes are 12%) (preferably less but I will go higher for the right equipment)

Must have:
i5-3570k
Full tower (with spot for water cooling)
Corsair H100 water cooling system

I prefer a tower that looks cool, but thats not a requirement.
Multi-Screen GPU would be bonus, but I really really dont care, I would only be using it for GW2 so its really not a big deal.

Go nuts guys n gals. This is for gaming.

PS:I will be overclocking the i5 to 4.5 MHz, maybe more.

Really don't consider the H100 a 'must-have', I'd rather have an H80 set to low for silence. You're going to hit the limit of your particular CPU before you run out of cooling capacity; even my lowly H60 has no problem keeping up with my 2500k at 4.8GHz, and that's with a ~10% voltage boost. Keep the 3570k close to stock voltage and you'll be fine.

For the case, look at Fractal Design's Define R4. It's inexpensive and full-featured for it's class.

I have a 3770K @4.6 and a H100 in a Corsair 550D with a dual GTX 570 setup. CPU and case fans are nice and quiet.

That 550D is a nice case, though a little expensive next to the Define R4 and P280. Corsair is definitely listening though!

Expensive is the 800D @ $275 or the Thermaltake Level 10 that went for $700+. The 550D is definitely not expensive.

It's quite a bit more than the Define R4 and P280, though. If you're going to spend money, might as well get a Silverstone Fortress FT-02 and do it right the first time.

The 550D is only $35 more than the R4 while the FT02B is $145 more than the R4. That is a massive difference.

The FT02B is an awkward case. The OP would be better off with the R4 and take that $145 and put it towards a good SSD (or two).

To the OP: I'm running a 120GB boot SSD and a 480GB SSD for my apps/games. Money well spent.

Point being, if you need more than an R4, you're cooling three GPUs on air, and need a real case. The FT-02 beats the hell out of anything Corsair has at any price on air cooling (and pretty much anything anyone else has) when you throw in three GPUs.

Who said anything about three GPUs? The OP's total budget, with tax, is $1,400.

And why did you turn this into an angry FT02 vs Corsair thing? They ended up suggesting the R4 for heavens sake.

Only in the response to the 'spend more' comments- for one or two GPUs, especially if you want a quiet case with good filtering, it's hard to beat the R4. Especially for it's size, it's significantly smaller than the P280. If you need three GPUs and aren't watercooling the FT-02 is unbeatable. If you are watercooling and/or need four GPUs, well, that's where the 800D really comes into play.

Case selection is personal based on what you like, your going to get differing opinions on this. People will become rabid in voicing their selections.

I'll throw my weight behind a Fractal Design recommendation; They're well made, sensibly laid out and generally great value.

Obviously a useless suggestion if you don't like the looks - they're all very plain.

The R4 is a bland ass case, not what im looking for at all, the corsair is also bland as hell, same as the FT-02... I did say I wanted it to look cool right? Your case is basically the bling for people who dont know much about computers, which I have alot of friends who dont know anything. All the cases suggested here are boring boxes. And dont tell me that the boxes are the best because I already know thats not true.

And to the poster of this reply: I was planning on running 2 500gb seagate barracudas in raid, but thats up for debate.

I prefer a tower that looks cool, but thats not a requirement.

I believe the gerbils looked at this and suggested functional cases with good cooling and low noise levels, as are typically preferred by this community.

Secondly, you should take a look at the most recent System Guide and get an idea of what your overall system would look like and get a better budget picture.

Lastly, you will get much farther in picking out components if you actually list out tangible requirements and feeback on suggested components rather than "that's a bland ass case" or "STOP BICKERING ABOUT THE DAMN CASE AND PLEASE HELP ME!" If you need a GPU suggestion, what games are you going to be playing? At what resolution? At what settings? All of those will drive what kind of GPU you will need, and that has to be brought into the scope of your whole budget, otherwise we can simply suggest a GTX 690 and call it done (even though it will probably break budget by a long shot).
On second thought, let's not go to TechReport. It's infested by crypto bull****.

OK so your budget is 1400/1.12= 1250 Candian Dollars, I will base it off my build and look for items on newegg.ca(in Canadian Dollars), ncix might be cheaper but I never used that site before.

Processor Intel Core i5-3570K 3.4GHz $235
Memory G.Skill Ares F3-1600C8D-8GAB(2X4) 8G $43.99 (16G is overkill for another 1-2 years)
Motherboard ASUS P8Z77-V LK $128.99 after rebate
Graphics EVGA GeForce GTX 670 FTW $414.99
Storage OCZ Vertex 4 256GBSSD $219.99
Enclosure Define R4 $109.99 (Cooler Master Storm Enforcer might be cool looking to you, at any rate whehter a case looks cool to you is up to you, just don't overspend for full tower that you don't need)
DVD-RW LG Black SATA 24X DVD Burner $17.99
CPUFan COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 EVO $34.99 (you will have to give up a lot else where fit a full tower case(most of those are in the 150 and up range & H100 which is at least $110 in you budget, both not needed for how much you will OC).

PSU Rosewill Hive 650 W $89.99
Total: $1201.92(rest goes to shipping etc)

This should be good enough to take you up to 4.5Ghz OC(everyone told me Hyper Evo is good enough for 4.5Ghz, H100 is for trying to get to 5 Ghz OC and is massively overkill for just 4.5Ghz+ requires larger cases to set up its massive radiator.) and FTW is enough gaming power for any game atm and a good value, not to mention blower type GPU works with Define R4 really well. There might be a few rebate I missed which means more saving for you.

I assume you have monitor, keyboard & mouse, if not you will have to buy a 1TB HDD and save about 100+ for those (I got SSD because it cuts down load/boot time for OS and games big time).

You could also wait for the GTX 660 release sometime this week, it will be a weaker(1.5G vram/less shaders)/cheaper(I say $250-230 range) in version of GTX670 or maybe an AMD card.

For reference : http://techreport.com/articles.x/23204/6 Techreport's Editor's choice July build for 1.5K and no aftermarket cooler. or the Sweetspot ($1000ish) builds are good example to look at.

For reference, my build on a 2K Budget (in USD/newegg price), designed for BF3 at high/Ultra setting level and 120Hz :

Processor Intel Core i5-3570K 3.4GHz $229.99
Memory G.Skill Ares F3-1600C8D-8GAB(2X4) 8G $43.99
Graphics EVGA GeForce GTX 670 FTW $407.99
Storage Samsung 830 256G $199.99
Enclosure Define R4 $109.99
CPUFan COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 EVO $34.99
Monitor ASUS VG276H 27” 120Hz 599.99 (have the money fortunately, otherwise the 23" model at $329 is a much better value)
Motherboard ASRock Z77 Extreme 4 $119.99
Optical Drive LG Black SATA 24X DVD Burner $14.39
Power supply Seasonic X650Gold $118.99
Total: $1880.30in USD

Your right, sorry I was being belligerent I am currently playing alot of Battlefield 3 and Anno 2070. I will be playing Guild Wars 2 and Borderlands 2 when it does come out. I was looking at a SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 7870 for $299, but I have no idea if that will be enough. But really, they do need to stop arguing about the cases.

My friend helped me build this, on newegg.ca

Intel Core i5-3570k $234.99

Cooler Master HAF 932 $113.99 (It was combo'ed with the ram)

G.Skill Ripjaws Series 16GB (4 x 4GB) $90.99

2x Seagate Barracuda ST3750525AS 750GB 7200RPM SATA 6GB Internal $139.98 for both

Sapphire Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition 2GB $139.99

MSI Z77A-G43 LGA 115 Intel Z77 $118.99

Corsair H100 $117.49

With shipping and taxes $1,459.33

How is this for a build? Will the motherboard be enough to handle everything I am throwing at it. I am planning on adding a second 7870 in the future, will everything be enough.

PS: I have a crap load of fans at home from my dad's previous builds.

Total: $1201.92(rest goes to shipping etc): this is before Tax, counting the Tax this is still under 1400.

Much better Graphic card and a SSD, you can downgrade those to add your precious Full tower and H100(for way more OC than you will actually use), go down to a 128 SSD with enough saving for either a H100 or a 1TB HDD. GTX670 can only be beaten by 7970 GHZ & Overclocked GTX680 while significantly cheaper than both. Even if you can OC up to 5Ghz with the H100 you will still be bottle-necked by your 7870 GPU in term of game performance.

Actually I was thinking NCIX would be better because I live 4 hours away from one of their buildings. I could drive and go pick it up. But as it pertains to your build, I need the internal memory to be large, I make and edit video's for youtube so I need the space on the main disk as so I dont ruin another SSD (had a 2tb solid state, it died because of the editing and uploading off of it). And the reason I want the water cooling is because I dont want the processor to even get warm, so that it lasts longer. I may turn up the overclock, as stated, but I would need it to be stable under stress for at least 14 hours (i sometime do the nono of leaving the game running and walking away for a couple hours).

OK so your budget is 1400/1.12= 1250 Candian Dollars, I will base it off my build and look for items on newegg.ca(in Canadian Dollars), ncix might be cheaper but I never used that site before.

Processor : Intel Core i5-3570K 3.4GHz $235
Memory : G.Skill Ares F3-1600C8D-8GAB(2X4) 8G $43.99 (16G is overkill for another 1-2 years, if you want that double this price)
Motherboard: ASUS P8Z77-V LK $128.99 after rebate
Graphics : EVGA GeForce GTX 670 FTW $414.99
Storage : OCZ Vertex 4 256GBSSD $219.99
Enclosure : Define R4 $109.99 (Cooler Master Storm Enforcer might be cool looking to you, at any rate whehter a case looks cool to you is up to you, just don't overspend for full tower that you don't need)
DVD-RW : LG Black SATA 24X DVD Burner $17.99
CPUFan : COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 EVO $34.99 (you will have to give up a lot else where fit a full tower case(most of those are in the 150 and up range & H100 which is at least $110 in you budget, both not needed for how much you will OC).
PSU : Rosewill Hive 650 W $89.99
Total: $1201.92(rest goes to shipping etc)

You can downgrade to a 128 GB SSD(still enough to hold you active games, move the rest steam folder to HDD) to save enough for a 1TB HDD , you can use your $100 7870(last gen) and save($300!) enough for you Overclock(bottle-necked by your cheap graphic card) and your extravagant Full Tower of choice, your 3 TB HDD and your H100. With your HD 7870 you will not gain 1 bit of extra gaming performance from a 4.5 Ghz compared to a 5 because your GPU is lagging so far behind the CPU.

With your limited budget, I'd put getting a good GPU ahead of enough OC power to go 5Ghz, most games performance are bottlenecked by your GPU.

At anyrate, I probably should have stopped reading when I saw $1400 including 12% Tax & Full Tower/H100 being a must have in the same paragraph.

That does help. Assuming 1080p? I think the 7870 should be able to handle BF3 pretty well. BF3 is also shown in TR's 7870 review for benchmarks. You should certianly take a peek there. I don't expect Guild Wars or Borderlands to be more intense than BF3, so there's your target. Considering your budget looks like it hits a little bit above the Sweet Spot in the Guide, that's probably a decent place to put the cash, too.

As for cases, if you're not big on the simplistic designs, I would just browse Newegg until something grabs your attention, then make sure that there are no major complaints in the reviews.

I'm working with Sherlock in another thread for his build, but his requirements are a little different than yours as he stated above; however, the base is mostly the same. Also, you might want to compare an 8 hour day trip with the price of shipping. I know gas is more expensive up in the frozen north!

If you need a lot of internal memory, you can reasonably expect RAM to not get much cheaper until we jump to another node, so topping out the system now makes some sense. In that vein, you can easily grab a 32GB kit (make sure you have Windows 7/8 Pro!) and not worry about it again. It's overkill for sure, but when you're editing video, 32GB surely doesn't seem like much.

If you killed an SSD, I assume that you had an older one/Sandforce-based one that was susceptible to significant write amplification when writing and rewriting in-compressible data. Something based on an Intel, Marvell, or Samsung controller will not likely have the same issue.

You still want an SSD- a 256GB Samsung 830 is probably your best bet for a workstation. Use the hard drives as storage and use the SSD as your workspace. You might even partition the SSD to keep your work data from affecting the OS/Apps/boot partition. If you have an external backup, RAID-0 should effectively boost your linear read/write speeds upwards of 250GB/s on Seagate's newer drives. It sounds like a reasonable video-editing setup to me.

For the CPU cooler, any integrated water-cooler is enough for a stock clocked CPU, and most are good for an overclocked CPU without extra help from additional fans or an airflow-focused enclosure. In that vein, Corsair's H80 has been tested to be the quietest IWC on the market with its fans set to Low.

Grab the Define R4 we're all talking about, move that 140mm rear fan to the front, and mount the H80 on the back. Case closed :).

I have decided that, since boxing day is only like 4 months away, I will hold off and just get everything on sale, that way i can get even better stuff, and have a bit more money for it all.

If I were the OP I'd take this $1533 Editor's choice build: http://techreport.com/articles.x/23422/6
and drop stuff you don't need:
-Sound card(Mobo audio is good enough): -48.99
-Blue Ray(get DVD-RW they are cheaper): - 42.00
- that Mobo actually have a $20 rebate: -$20.00
-The 650 D case is vastly overpriced, get a Corsair 400R(confirmed to house H100) : -80
- Drop the SSD(-198.99) to fund your H100(+104.99): -94

New Total: $1245.02, fits neatly into your budget and does everything you need.

Disagree with those.

If you have nice(er) speakers/headphones, a sound card can certainly improve things. If you're sticking to basics, sure, cut it out and save the cash, but it's a solid performance boost if needed.

As for SSD, I that's one of the best reasons to upgrade nowadays. New Mobos will carry 6 Gbps, and with SSD prices hitting < $1/GB, the value is worth it.

That being said, you could swap the GTX 670 with the 660 Ti in the Sweet Spot and save $90, do the same with SSDs and get $104, then cut out the Blu-Ray drive and easily make budget.

When it comes to the case, I question the need for a full tower. OP, would you care to clarify why you need full ATX? Just curious, since Mid-ATX towers can still house a LOT of drives, especially if the manufacturer is smart with laying things out.

Should I remind you again the OP is limited to a $1400 Canadian budget count a whooping 12% Tax?? The either the SSD have to go or you have to down grade the graphic card to make room for the H100(this, not drives is the reason OP think he needs a full tower, however Some mid tower like the Corsair 400/500R can easily house those.. A SSD can always be added later with ease, whereas you lose a lot of money upgrading a 660 Ti to a 670 unless you use EVGA step up,granted 660Ti might be good enough for the OP, if so downgrading Graphic card is probably an OK option.

On second though getting 660Ti instead of 670 is probably a better route for savings than dropping the SSD, but suggeting a $50 sound card on $1250 Canadian(after deductin tax) budget build is outrageous.
