Nancy Wilson (guitarist from Heart) - Kathy's Song

This is an acoustic (just guitar and vocals) cover of an old Simon & Garfunkel song. Absolutely beautiful... just perfect.

Orange Goblin - A Eulogy For The Damned (album)

Hadn't heard anything by them before, and I'm very very pleasant surprised. Really rockin' riffs! I recommend "Red Tide Rising" as a nice sampler, one of the heavier songs, but has an awesome groove.

Also, JBI, great taste.

CD version of the Hitchhiker's Guide radio plays. On to the Quintessential Phase now and even though I know how it ends the journey is always uplifting.

Might have something to do with Arthur Dent's dressing gown and my well-documented college-era bathrobe.

Workin' late tonight, and trompin' through several of my old Heart albums, including the Nancy Wilson solo album that the above song came from - "Live At McCabe's Guitar Shop". All acoustic, mix of covers (she also covers Joni Mitchell and Peter Gabriel), couple of Heart songs, and original material.

I've probably mentioned it previously, but Heart's "Jupiter's Darling" album (released 2004) really is an overlooked gem. IMO better than any of their studio releases from the 1980s-1990s, they ditched the slick over-produced arena rock shtick and got back to their roots. Album's apparently named after an old Esther Williams film, go figure. And it has a Mandelbrot Set fractal on the cover...

Edit: "The Road Home" deserves more recognition as well. Laid back "unplugged" live set from 1995 with John Paul Jones of Led Zep guesting (and producing).

Heavy is good, heavy is reliable. If it doesn't work, you can always hit them with it.

Sandy Denny.

Of all the singers that left us too early in the '70s she's the one I miss the most.

Ann & Nancy got their start playing Led Zep covers in Seattle bars. If YouTube is correct this is from 2004.

The Wilsons also had a side project called the Lovemongers a while back. I've got a live recording of them doing this, sounds very similar to the YouTube clip you linked.

Yup, Led Zep covers have been a staple of their live shows (usually as an encore) since pretty much forever. IIRC I've even got a vinyl boot of a concert they did back in the mid '70s that has a couple of Zep covers on it.

Actually, I'm not sure that's the one... might be... the set list is similar.

I've also always considered "Mistral Wind" from their Dog and Butterfly album to be a Led Zep tribute of sorts even though it isn't a cover. Long-form song that opens with a quiet acoustic guitar riff and builds to an incredible climax. It's almost like they said "Hey, let's do something sort of like Stairway to Heaven".

Info file says it's from a vinyl boot, so I took a shot.

^ Pendulum rules.

I've recently discovered Corelia and The Safety Fire (thanks to Venus Fallen clothing). I'm particularly fond of Corelia. They have a very Periphery-esque sound with comparable talent, and they even feature Spencer as a guest singer in one of their songs.

The Safety Fire is pretty unique since their singer has a more hardcore punk style, but the music is definitely technical/progressive metal.

I'm listening to my favorite clarinetist, Sharon Kam. She's totally incredible. Specifically, right now, Morton Gould's Derivations for Clarinet and Band.

Next time you're in the classical section of your library's CD catalog, pick one of her CDs up if you see it. It's really stunning stuff.

Also, if you haven't heard of Hiromi Uehara, you need to inform yourself. She's a cute Japanese girl who plays the meanest jazz piano you've ever heard.

Thank you for this reminder! I have a copy of 'The Essential Heart' but I've been meaning to check out Jupiter's Darling for a while now. So I just moseyed on over to Freegal, which we can link to from our local library account. 5 DRM free MP3 downloads a week! So I know what I'm going to get this week and next. Thank you!!

You're welcome! :D

Slightly off-topic: "Best Of" type collections usually annoy me. I rarely agree with whoever chose the tracks to be included; some of my favorites are always missing, and some songs that I could do without are always included...

"The Ninth Wave" (second side of the 1985 Kate Bush album "The Hounds of Love") is amazing. Probably been a couple of years since I last listened to it... it's kind of like meeting an old friend you haven't seen in a while.

Thanks for the tip, that is awesome.

Right now I am listening to Red Fang - Murder the Mountains. Great stoner rock. Check out some of their videos on YouTube: Wires, Hank Is Dead. Fun stuff.
