GeForce EN210 in a PIC 1.0 motherboard

Mon Sep 10, 2012 2:59 pm

Hi guys,

I am looking for a cheap, silent, and win7 compatible graphics card to speed up a friend's old desktop ( please see the link below for its specs ).
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&taskId=120&prodSeriesId=1844701&prodTypeId=12454&objectID=c00649834

The mainboard, a MSI MS-7254, has only PCIe 1.0, but I cannot find a retail store in my area that is still selling PCIe1.0 graphics cards.

I have read that PCIe2.0 cards are backward compatible with PCIe1.0 mainboards, so I went on my favorite store and found my prey: Asus GeForce EN210 Silent, which is a PCIe2.0/2.1 card; please see the link below for its details
http://www.steg-electronics.ch/it/article/asus-en-210-325202.aspx

According to my reasoning, the card should work, but I'd like the confirmation from someone more knowledgeable than me :)
The other thing I am concerned with is power: the power supply in this desktop is 250W capable and the EN210 needs 75W max; will 250W be enough? ( apart form the standard configs, there is one additional dvd writer attached, but I don't know how much power it drains ).

Thanks a lot for your time!

Yeah, you won't have any problems, and it'll be a dramatic speedup compared to that integrated X300.

Here's a power supply calculator to determine what the recommended PSU wattage is for a given hardware config.

By the way, the term "speed up" and a GT 210 are typically not used in the same sentence. What is the purpose of this "upgrade?"
Main: i5-3570K, ASRock Z77 Pro4-M, MSI RX480 8G, 500GB Crucial BX100, 2 TB Samsung EcoGreen F4, 16GB 1600MHz G.Skill @1.25V, EVGA 550-G2, Silverstone PS07B
HTPC: A8-5600K, MSI FM2-A75IA-E53, 4TB Seagate SSHD, 8GB 1866MHz G.Skill, Crosley D-25 Case Mod

Considering it's a X300 he's upgrading from, which was slow as HELL when it was released? I think a G210 is a fine upgrade.

A Geforce GT 520 perhaps over the 210. Get more cores 48 in place of 16, and DDR3 more memory bandwidth for the same price.
Also 29 watts max power consumed for Gigabyte Geforce 520 GT card instead of 30 watts for ASUS Geforce 210 card.

It would take you 2,363 continuous hours or 98 days,11 hours, and 35 minutes of gameplay to complete your Steam library.
In this time you could travel to Venus one time.

That's actually a good idea.

A GT520 or an AMD 6450, they both perform roughly the same.
