Kickstarter Game Projects

Sun Apr 08, 2012 12:28 am

I wanted to collect/share links to Kickstarter game and game-related projects (other patronage systems are fine as well).

Since there are so many game projects currently running, I'll just list ones I liked. If you think one is particularly neat, I'll edit it into the list.

Currently running:

Oh and FYI, I find myself dumping a lot of loot into these projects too... I LOVE how they completely bypass the publishers. I hope it changes and eradicates the concept of a publisher. Support by the players/fans/end-users is how it should always be done!

They need to use this concept in everything. Music cd's, tv shows, movies, beer, food, everything!

Well, I like this revival and democratization of patronage, too, but I'm not sure I want it to eradicate traditional publishing. I do like a great many AAA monstrosity titles and I don't think Kickstarter et al. will be able to fund those sorts of productions. At least not in the near term.

So Wasteland 2 was successfully funded. Huzzah.

Crate Entertainment put up a Kickstarter for Grim Dawn, an old-school ARPG. They are ex Iron Lore folks (creators of Titan Quest). They've been working on Grim Dawn for two or three years now and want at least 280K to hire more full-time devs (there's currently just two of 'em with many part-timers).

While not on kickstarter, Path of Exile is another ARPG, pretty much Diablo 2.5, but with a wickedly deep/clever currency and item system. It is being made on a F2P system with a statement by the devs of "we absolutely do not believe that any paid content will aid in gameplay", they currently offer added stash tabs and character slots and are planning on doing alternate costumes/models for the chars as paid content as well.

"Donating" gives you access to the closed beta as well as 100 points into their system, so it has a similar feel to helping a kickstarter project.

(and yes I made a comment about the game in the D3 thread too, its just a damned good game, want it to be successful)
I am jaded. I am cynical.

Dead State will be getting a Kickstarter campaign soon. I've supported FTL, Wasteland 2 and StarDrive so far. Xenonauts is a strong maybe.

I really like this new trend of crowd funding.

I've gone in on FTL, Wasteland 2, Double Fine's project, and Shadowrun Returns.

I'm thinking about Xenonauts (I could never get past the interface in X-Com, but I did like the idea of the game).

They have an early alpha build of Xenonauts for download if you haven't heard it, so try it and see if you like it enough to back the project.

Oh, doodle! I hadn't heard anything about them in a while... good news.

The people at Slightly Mad Studios cooked up their own souped-up Kickstarter-like system for Project Cars and they recently announced they've raised a million euros so far. So $1,300,000 or so. Funky.

FYI, the Dead State KickStarter is wrapping up in 6 days. Now is the time to pitch in, I'm hoping they make it to at least the $300k stretch goal but the $330k and $360k sound good too. :)

Three days to go for Dead State guys. Don't mind me, I'm just obeying the email updates I keep getting begging me to promote it. You can't call me a shill though because I genuinely want them to meet their stretch goals, particularly the The City Area and Animals. :)

Three HOURS left to go, we just hit $300k and got a new stretch goal "unlocked" - now we just need $10k/hr remaining and we can get animals too. :o

Apparently 3 people donated 5 grand each in the final minutes to hit 330k.

Pretty cool.

Let me know when a kickstarter game has actually come to fruition and is available.

EDIT: Actually RPS has a weekly wrap up of all the Kickstarter projects.

This thread has been dead. You guys getting kickstarter fatigue? :)

There is a pretty cool RPG called Expeditions: Conquistador that is asking for a pretty reasonable 70k. Features a unused setting, Spaniards in Central America, turn based tactical combat, and supposed to have an engrossing story with choices and consequences.

Hmmm... That one has potential...

However, THIS ONE is my new front runner for most desired Kickstarter game - possibly ANY game. You can put rocket engines on astroids and crash them into planets! Sold. :o

I saw that yesterday...and I must...resist...throwing...money....

I think someone asked if anything had yet come to fruition, but I threw some money at "Evil Baby Orphanage"--a card game--and they're making the printable version available in a couple days.
On second thought, let's not go to TechReport. It's infested by crypto bull****.

The Planetary Annihilation Kickstarter is coming to a close. There are just 64 hours to go and the final stretch goals have been announced. Funny how the promise of a soundtrack done by a full orchestra can tease more money out of me than I had already pledged total. If any of you played Total Annihilation you'll understand why it did though. Best. Soundtrack. Ever. If this goal is reached the same orchestra that did TA's music will be doing PA's music. :D

Expeditions: Conquistador has met it's target. About 6 hours to go and 5k short of the first stretch goal right now.

I love all these old school style RPGs getting made.

Also, for people who still chant "wait until a kickstarter project actually makes something", FTL: Faster Than LIght has a beta out on Steam right now. Release is supposed to be next month. They could release right now if they needed to, it's a complete game with minimal bugs (I haven't encountered any).

Notable because $1.2million raised in 9 days. It's a classic adventure game based on a comic that has 6000 pages, a few hours of full animation, over a week of soundtrack and more text than War and Peace.
