Popped Video Card Caps

Tue Oct 02, 2012 7:06 pm

So the video card in my main desktop popped some caps and died.

I have a couple of replacements in mind, and I would like to know if anyone has any experience with them in, obviously, Linux systems with the FOSS drivers. I was using a XFX Geforce 8600GT with the Fedora 17 Nouveau driver.

First up, XFX HD-675X-ZDFC Radeon HD 6750 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready Video Card (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814150602).

Next, EVGA 04G-P4-2647-KR GeForce GT 640 4GB 128-bit DDR3 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready Video Card (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814130818).

I'm not into gaming, so either of these will probably work. However, I do like running KDE, and Kwin is very picky about the video card drivers.

I'm running Linux Mint 13 KDE on my 6870 and havn't had a single issue. I'm sure either card will be fine.

Cool, and are you using the xf86-video-ati driver rather then the Catalyst driver?

Comparing the feature matrices of the two cards definitely makes the AMD card look better. It would be N. Islands vs. NVC0 so people won't have to look up the chipset family of the listed cards.

If you have access to a soldering iron, you could also try recapping the dead card... since you don't game, you don't really gain anything by going with a newer one.
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

Replacing the caps did cross my mind. :)

It's been around eleven years since I soldered anything, so I'm not confident I wouldn't mess it up the first couple of times. This would be an interesting project when I have some time. Hmm... Where can I get a junker with a PCIe slot...

Awesome, I just found a forum thread about bad caps on my card. Those are the ones that popped. :D

Blown (FZ78 1500 6.3v) on XFX 8600 GT. What to buy?

Don't worry. Once that first whiff of solder/rosin hits your nose it instantly comes back. The HeathKit alarm clock on my nightstand is testimony to that.
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.
