Updated: New Crucial m4 Firmware Out: 040H

Fri Oct 05, 2012 1:04 pm

Hello Crucial m4 Owners,

Seems there is new firmware out for the Crucial m4 series of SSDs.

http://www.crucial.com/support/firmware.aspx

Some notes from the Crucial site:
Release Date: 09/25/2012
Firmware for the Crucial m4 2.5” SSD is being updated from version 000F to 010G.
The m4 is updatable to this new firmware starting from any previous version in a single step.
Do NOT use any other m4 firmware update for your 2.5” SSD such as the 01MG firmware for the mSATA form factor.
Version 010G includes the following changes:
* Improved Trim response time
* Improved power-on-to-ready time (known as POR, or TTR for Time-to-ready)
* Improved resume-time from low power modes, and improved reliability of warm reboot
* Improved power consumption by disabling HIPM (Host Initiated Power Management)]

I have a pair of m4s (a 256GB and a 512GB) in my system. The last firmware update went smoothly for me. Has anyone tried this 010G version yet?

Edit: Updated title to reflect new 040H version

Not yet, but I've got a couple of customers with 128gb versions of the drive. None of which are having issues after the 000F firmware update.

Have you noticed any major performance or reliability changes with the firmware update?

Mine are running flawlessly 24/7 on the 000F firmware. I won't be able to update to 010G until after the weekend. That, and I'm getting a bit of the "if it ain't broke..." feeling...

I run full image backups daily so I'm not too concerned about data loss.

updated without incident.

Can't say I see any difference. But that is good right? I think we are quickly approaching "good enough" with SSD. The improvement from HD was dramatic, but incremental improvement from here is just really hard to notice.

I'll still buy the best for new builds...have a Samsung 830 on order(128GB for $89 ...couldn't pass up) but am not expecting to see any really difference in "feel"

Yeah that's kind of my feeling as well. It's already so fast I just can't imagine it providing a noticeable difference. "Improved power consumption" isn't particularly exciting for a desktop either. I don't think the SSD is the big power draw in a system with an overclocked 2500K and GTX460 :P

It's not like graphics cards where you do see lower performance than you'd like sometimes, so drivers may improve it. I've never said to myself "I wish this SSD was faster".

I have yet to deploy my M4 256 GB SSD, so I'll probably use 010G the get-go. Thank you for the head's up.

Yea, my 512GB also works perfectly with previous 000F firmware and since the new one doesn't bring any performance-enhancing features I doubt I will be upgrading it...

A heads' up to everybody. Crucial's forum shows that there may be some issues with 010G, especially with UEFI.

Might be best to review for yourself and decide.

I am going to hold off on this update for a bit and wait it out.

FYI: New m4s are shipping with the 010G firmware. The 128GB I just received (from amazon) has it.

I'll have to look at the M4 in my laptop- got it back in May. As long as it's non-destructive I'll give it a shot.

In other news, I just lost the install on my 120GB Intel 320 to the 8MB bug- but I was able to flash it up and revive it (took some playing with the SATA settings to get it recognizable). The 160GB 320 in my desktop flashed in place without any loss.

Yikes... a buddy was having major problems running older firmware. We couldn't update to the release previous to 010G. The update program would never detect the drive, no matter what we tried. He updated using 010G a day after it was released. No problems so far, but we'll be much more careful next time. My 3 M4s were also updated without issue. I'm not using UEFI though. Not yet at least.

I successfully updated the firmware on both of my Crucial m4s to revision 040H. I encountered no problems. My ASUS P8Z77V-Pro mobo uses UEFI but this was a non-issue in the update process. The PC seems a little faster in bootup now.

I had skipped the 010G and was running the 000F firmware prior to tonight's update.

Is the power cycle problem fixed? I have to admit I haven't read all the posts on the Crucial forum.

No problems with power cycling for me. The drives always show in BIOS/UEFI/whatever. :D

Trouble-free for me.

256GB for $160 (seems to be today only) I guess I will be in for one. :P
