Project Eternity Kickstarter

Tue Oct 16, 2012 3:14 am

16 hours to go to get some great rewards by backing Obsidian Entertainment's new RPG.

It looks very promising right now after all of the goals they have achieved thus far.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/obs ... t-eternity

They currently sit at 3.4 million and are promising a second big city after reaching 3.5.

Project Eternity is a roleplaying game in the style of the Infinity Engine games (i.e. the Baldur's Gate series, Planescape: Torment and Icewind Dale). It's in isometric perspective and is distinguished by having party-based (up to 6 characters), real-time with pause combat. It's not something a traditional publisher would be interested in because of the scale, so it's being financed by a Kickstarter like many other such games. The studio producing it is Obsidian. It includes many of the people who worked on Planescape: Torment, Fallout, etc.

They've currently raised around $3.4 million which was roughly the budget of the Infinity Engine games back when they were state of the art. They've also made available most of the trinkets and add-ons that people asked of them over the past month.

They've also released a lot (and I do mean a lot) of information about the setting, characters, rules and so on in the form of updates. The same page also addresses various concerns about how they are going to make the game and make sure that it doesn't suffer from too many bugs (classic case of turning a weakness into a strength: they decided to make a public beta and offer keys at the higher reward tiers).

This Kickstarter ends in a little bit over 14 hours (at 6PM Pacific Standard Time) so if you're a fan of the Infinity Engine games, and you have not seen it yet, take a look.

 Did you just copy and paste most of my post from the NBR forum? I don't particularly mind in this case, but please attribute stuff like that otherwise people get confused about user names (i.e. it would be reasonable for people who read both to assume that Althernai at the NBR forums and DeadOfKnight at TechReport are the same person).

Apparently they have enough backers from their PayPal portal for over $100k and almost another dungeon level. New stretch goal maybe?

They said they'd add another dungeon level if they can get up to 40k likes on the obsidian facebook page, but I don't see it happening.

Wait, so why would you buy multiple copies? I mean, ok, a gift, but like a 4-pack?

What's the context? Maybe being dense, but I'm not getting it.

To give to your friends. I'm getting the boxed version and will give the second, downloadable copy that comes with it to my sister.

Well, they have an additional copy for an extra $25. But then there is a $60 3 more copies option, too. I can understand one as a gift but 3 seemed a bit much and it's typical of a 4-player co-op pack, in my mind.

I typically game with my wife but there's no point in getting two copies if we just would be running two SP games 5 feet away from each other.

They just posted an update announcing a special Loot Bag that includes, their $250 tier, an AMD A10 processor and various other stuff for $350. Too bad there were only 30 of them -- they sold out within minutes.

Keep watching. From what I understand, sometimes one of those spots will open up if someone moves up or drops down a tier.
